We were deeply inspired by Bea Johnson's (Zero Waste Home) TEDx talk which opens with "The average American generates one ton of waste annually." That number is so outrageous, it’s impossible for us to begin to imagine what that looks like. We all know single-use beverage containers are a huge part of this problem. So to help people see just how much they waste, we designed a dress made from the number of cups, bottles and cans used by the average person annually. On the way to New York Fashion Week, thousands of spectators couldn’t help but notice. Many of them were capturing the event with their phone in one hand and holding a disposable cup or bottle in the other. The question is: why are the mistakes we make every day only shocking when we see them all together?
