Mama Lam is Malaysian Chinese and arrived in New York City in the 80's. Although the city is a “melting pot”, it did not offer many Malaysian curry options that made her to feel like home. So, she resorted to creating her own recipe thather children grew up enjoying. Each batch of sauce is made with a touch of Mama Lam’s love.

Something magical is happening at this week!!

When Fany and I met up a couple weeks ago to brainstorm what to do with the Kaya - I was having a whirlwind of emotions. Upset I messed up the batch, so physically tired from cooking but also so hopeful that something can be done with it. I also hate asking for help, but not as much as I hate being wasteful, and I’m no chef so I asked the public for ideas. The masterful Chef immediately reached out to share some ideas, as well as a story when she had a similar predicament and she turned it into something magical. It made me feel less of a failure as it is something that happens to people - we are humans! But it’s all about how we take that mistake and failure and turn it into something else. That something else…

Getting into new stores is typically the easy part, but staying on the shelves at those stores is the real challenge for wholesale.

Mama Lam’s products pretty much sell themselves, once people get a taste them. So it’s our job to get in front of the potential customers to make sure they get that taste.

Thank you for everyone’s awesome ideas!

I just wanted to share some updates on how the thick and sticky Kaya is doing… first things first. It can last longer than 2 weeks (thank goodness!) since I slow cooked this for 14 hours. As long as it’s refrigerated, we will have a bit more time to repurpose it.

Then, I spoke with some friends over the last week to come up with ideas! Eclairs, lattes, mochi and chocolate truffles!?

So grateful for baking friends who came through to help me out of this sticky mess. It really was depressing and upsetting when I realized that the Kaya that I was cooking for 14 hours couldn’t be filled. But moving past that and trying to look on the bright side!

We can turn this silly mistake into something delicious. Stay tuned on what’s coming!
