Every primary and Election Day, I help them review their ballot. There’s a lot to go through, so I research the candidates and issues, answer their questions, and help them understand their choices.

I don’t tell them how to vote—I help them make informed decisions for themselves.

We moved offices last week, and looking at all the random stuff we saved made me realize how much I’ve inherited my family’s habits.

Keeping every box, jar, and piece of bubble wrap “just in case” usually gets labeled as hoarding. But for immigrant families, it’s a survival mechanism passed down from generations who dealt with war, colonization, or sudden scarcity.

I used to be embarrassed by it. Now, I see that it’s also about sustainability—it’s how our elders managed to survive abroad and build a life here with very little.

If you feel guilty or stressed by these kinds of habits, take a breath. Give yourself some grace. There is nothing wrong with you; you’re just navigating a long history.
