The smell of my bubbe’s chicken soup is something that brings me right back to her kitchen. Both stomach and soul filling. The whole thing about Jewish penicillin may not be scientifically true, but I dare anyone not feeling well to try a bowl and not feel so much better. Simple to make. it freezes well to save for those times you’re not quite feeling great. Try this recipe and see if I’m not right.

Kasha Varnishkes was the side dish of side dishes. I could never get enough. A bit salty with slivers of sauteed onions mixed into the buckwheat. And while many made it with oil, this was a dish made to be made with shmaltz. The word "light" deserved to be nowhere near this dish, but oh how delicious!!

My story with my bubbe’s stuffed cabbage begins before I did. When my mother was pregnant with me, she’d go over to bubbe’s house at least once a week, maybe more, and have her stuffed cabbage for dinner. You could say, and she occasionally did, that I’m made from bubbe’s stuffed cabbage.

When I was little, we’d have it about once a week and I refused to eat the cabbage, little did I know the power in that steamed vegetable.
