Great Falls

Yesterday we had temperatures in the 60's and today it is in the 50's so we are trying to get as much done as possible before winter sets in tomorrow with snow and highs in the 20's and 30's for the next 10 days or so which would be closer to normal for this time of year. All the forms for the walls finally got cleaned and returned to Great Falls. That took much longer than expected. Today and tomorrow we hope to get the prep room closed in with windows and doors and then we can start on enclosing the greenhouse itself. Once that is done the rest of the work can be done inside the greenhouse out of the winter weather. I will let you know next week how far we got. Have a good weekend - your friend - bob

Earlier last month, TFFJ staff and alumni spoke at The Sweet Truth Program rally at City Hall led by Councilmember NYC Council Member Mark Levine and Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) . TFFJ staffers Amanda and Renae, along with TFFJ alumnus and Program Intern Joshua, advocated on behalf of our students for the City Council to pass The Sweet Truth Act (INT 1326) requiring fast-food chain restaurants to add a warning label to any menu item that exceeds a day's worth of added sugar.

TFFJ students learn the value of healthy eating and the importance of equitable access to nutritious food while working to provide that food for themselves and their communities. We call this Nourishing Communities – our third mission pillar. Recently, TFFJ received a @USDA urban agricultural grant to expand our mission to the Rockaway Peninsula.

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief, Terry Cosby, described TFFJ's project among those that will "nourish communities with fresh, healthy food; teach generations the joy and fulfillment of farming and partnerships; and produce environmental benefits by reducing food waste and creating compost that can be used in a variety of farming operations." We are so grateful for this grant and the opportunity to serve more communities throughout New York City!

In TFFJ's program, students harvest, taste, and learn from the foods they grow. Our third mission pillar - Nourishing Bodies - teaches students to prepare healthy recipes with their harvests and incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diets. As a result, 100% of students understand how nutritious food makes a positive difference in their health.

In 2018, the U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report outlining the increase in diet-related conditions like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and obesity as a result of unhealthy food consumption. TFFJ seeks to combat these outcomes through school-based hydroponic farming that increases healthy food access where these outcomes are most prevalent. We also teach students the importance of a healthy diet and to advocate for equitable access to nutritious, healthy, and fresh foods.

Visit @usgao to learn more about the national strategies, like ours, that can reduce the incidence of diet-related diseases each year.

Hero of the Day!

Check out TFFJ, recognized as the Gooddaynewyork Hero of the Day on FOX 5 / Fox5NY.com!

From July 14, 2020, through August 17, 2021, TFFJ delivered more than 580,000 pounds of fresh produce and seasonal items to New York City residents and families throughout the pandemic. Our CEO and Co-Founder, Katherine Soll, said, "Many New Yorkers experienced a loss of or dramatic decrease in income during the pandemic, which continues to widen disparities for under-resourced and food insecure communities. We provided a quick and high-quality solution to the lack of affordable and fresh food options." TFFJ continues to provide communities across NYC and beyond access to fresh, nutritious, and affordable food.

#NYC // #OPPORTUNITY // #NONPROFIT // Fight #FoodWaste & #FoodInsecurity Part-time outdoor gig with food rescue non-profit! At Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, we aim to feed the hungry and reduce food waste. To connect food providers to the hungry of New York City, we need all the help we can get in transporting leftover food. Rescuers help bring food from our partners to a local homeless shelter. It takes an average of 30 minutes to rescue an average of 35lbs. We are looking for 2 types of food rescue volunteers: 1. Core Rescuers: complete 5 food rescue events per week and receive unlimited monthly MetroCards in exchange. 2. Rescuer Associates: complete 10 food rescue events per week and get paid $8 per event. If interested, please email me at [email protected]
A fundraising idea: have paid workshops where you teach adults how to do this at home on a small scale (like just 2 trays) -- it could change food dessert areas of our city dramatically. Maybe hook up with health clinics for cancer, MS, lupus, etc. where folks need help following a better diet, esp. the green veggies part, but can't afford Whole Foods.
I have been trying to raise awareness of preservatives that waste food, by impairing digestion. I am concerned that many food programs fail to offer safe food for people with Autism, leaving them incontinent and smelling very bad. Please feel free to let know if you have links, you feel should be shared here.Thank you. https://www.facebook.com/Autistics-are-Peaceful-136128676553018/?ref=settings
