As most of you know I’m blind in one eye. Over the last two years I’ve had issues with my one and only. Harsh sunlight triggers Ocular Migraines. I have had some success in managing it with medication and dietary changes. It’s hard, I’m not gonna lie. I now have my service dog who learns very quickly. When I drop things he picks them up for me, when I go outside I wear dark shades and a hat that frames the top of my eye shades, but when you wear prescription glasses and have to abandon them for eye protection it’s tough. I now have prescription sunglasses. The doc in Houston started me on meds that have reduced the worst symptoms and I’m grateful. My dog is being trained to bring me to the house when I literally go blind outside. I’ve memorized the steps from most locations outside to my front steps so depending on where I am I don’t stumble quite as bad. I’ve added the symptoms Ocular Migraines can have below.
My yard not up to your standards? Sorry, I’m doing the best that I can. So you have two choices, get over it or die with it.
Symptoms and Causes
What are the symptoms of ocular migraine?
The symptoms of ocular migraine (retinal migraine) can vary. But the main symptoms are visual disturbances in only one eye and a migraine headache.
The visual symptoms of ocular migraine may include temporary:
Blind spots that result in partial or total blindness.
Zigzagging patterns.
Shimmering or flickering lights.
Floating lines.
These symptoms usually last 10 to 20 minutes before your vision gradually returns to its normal state. The attacks affect the same eye in almost all cases of ocular migraine.
The migraine headache can happen before, during or within an hour after the attack. Symptoms of a migraine headache include:
Moderate to severe head pain that’s pounding, throbbing, pulsing or dull. The pain usually occurs behind your affected eye.
Sensitivity to light, noise and/or odors.
Nausea and vomiting.
Loss of appetite.
Feeling very warm (sweating) or cold (chills).
Pale skin color (pallor).
Feeling tired.
How long do ocular migraines last?
The visual issues of ocular migraines typically last five to 60 minutes. But the headache can last from four to 72 hours if it’s not treated.
