What you see is a cute little cow getting a bottle. What you may not think about and see is the time and money that is put into that calf for it to initially not make it. Over the past week and a half we have spent countless hours bottle feeding this calf, taking it’s temperature, cooling the calf down, getting its mom up for it to drink from her and then making the decision to take it to the barn to exclusively bottle feed him. From early mornings, mid day and then late nights in the barn trying to get the calf to drink from the bottle. The friends that came to help to the vet coming to check him out. There was also the cost of milk replacer and electrolytes to try and get him to have enough strength to take the next bottle. He was definitely smaller than most calves we have and his mom could tell something was wrong with him.
When you buy American beef from your local farmer you know those animals are well taken care of. Farmers don’t want to see their animals die and try everything they can to keep them living. One less animal means less money for them. With the rising costs of everything it is more important now than ever to support your local farmer and buy direct from the farmer where you can. If you need recommendations on local farmers you can support feel free to reach out. We have lots of farmer friends we love to recommend!
