I'm really bad at this whole social media thing, but I promise we're still here and we're still growing!

Today we filled a wheelbarrow with garlic and then started it curing. This is softneck garlic, so it doesn't keep as long but it's ready a little earlier than hardneck varieties.

Here's a nice, not-freaked-out analysis of recent egg prices.

I think the biggest thing people don't understand is just how old most of the food at a grocery store is. While I can get an egg from our girls, cook it, and eat it same-day, a dozen eggs you get at Wal*Mart might actually be several weeks or even months old by the time it reaches the shelf. Some produce could even takes a year to get to us! Just because our daily lives have gone back to normal doesn't mean we aren't still dealing with issues from the pandemic.

Our original chicken coop just wasn't working out like we wanted, so the girls got an upgrade! We got the plans for this Chick-shaw and built it all ourselves. That's a major accomplishment for a family who's never built anything more complicated than a flat-pack book case before!

This new coop can hold up to 35 birds, the top opens, the nesting boxes in back can be accessed from outside, and one person can move it around as needed!

One of our goals on the farm is to grow things that are a little weird or unusual - you might even call them... Peculiar!

My absolute favorite fruit is the American Pawpaw, and over the weekend we took a trip to the Pawpaw Festival in Ohio. This is a fun annual event full of all sorts of activities and workshops and we try to go as often as we can. Starting an orchard is our top priority for next year but sadly they didn't have the pawpaw varieties we want to grow, so the hunt continues.

On the other hand we did pick up some fig trees, plenty of fresh pawpaws, and some great memories.

Today a hawk tried several times to get our chickens

According to my wife, the yard looks like a miniature renaissance fair. We have poles placed throughout the chickens' pen, and we've tied reflective streamers to them. This works to deter aerial predators two ways: It denies them an open area to easily dive and climb back out, and light off the streamers distracts them. People often stop and ask if it works - well, today we saw it for ourselves. All of our chickens are safe and sound despite the hawk's best efforts.
