💚 Gastroparesis Awareness Month 💚
I wanted to take a minute to talk about something that hits a little closer to home for me gastroparesis.
Gastroparesis is a condition where the stomach empties food more slowly than it should. For some people, that can mean nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, vomiting, or feeling full after eating just a small amount.
For me, it can be a bit of a guessing game. 😅 There are foods I used to enjoy that my stomach just doesn’t agree with anymore, and sometimes something I eat can trigger a flare of nausea. Thankfully, I’m still able to enjoy most foods, and for that I am incredibly grateful. ❤️
And since I’m a baker, I have to talk about sourdough! 🍞
Sourdough’s long fermentation process can break down some of the carbohydrates in wheat, including certain FODMAPs like fructans. For some people, that can make sourdough easier to tolerate than other types of bread.
But everyone’s stomach is different, especially when you’re living with gastroparesis. What works beautifully for one person may not work for another — and sourdough isn’t a treatment or cure for gastroparesis.
For me, I’m just thankful that I can still enjoy the foods I love and keep doing what I love most: baking. 🥖❤️
Gastroparesis can be an invisible illness. You might see someone laughing, working, cooking, baking, or going about their day and never know what their stomach is putting them through.
So this month, I’m helping spread a little awareness for something I personally live with.
💚 If you live with gastroparesis, what is one food you can still enjoy that you’re thankful for?
