***I just added some additional observations below the original post for those who have already read this***

Given the controversy of today's Kentucky Derby and being an avid follower of horse racing...I figured I would weigh in on the issue. Everyone is focusing on Country House, when he was nothing but the beneficiary of the DQ. Long Range Toddy, Code of Honor, and especially War of Will lost all chance to win and probably would have finished well ahead of Country House if not for having to check hard and lose all momentum. If you watch the race back, going down the back stretch Tyler Gaffalione was holding back War of Will with everything he had. He had TONS of horse and just as he was making his move at the head of the stretch, he dang near went down...and it would have been a potentially terrible accident with multiple trailing horses going down. I think War of Will at least finishes in the money if not for that. Yeah it stinks that it is the Derby, but it was a clear violation. I don't think people would be so up in arms if Gaffalione had logged the objection (rightly so) instead of Flavian Prat...who complained about being impacted when he clearly wasn't. I'm surprised this hasn't happened before. Feel free to agree or disagree. I understand both sides of it and I hate how the whole thing came down. It leaves on huge black mark on this years Derby!

***I just watched the slow motion video of the incident again and War of Will was literally about to BLOW BY Maximum Security to his right...but had to totally check up to keep from going down. Country House just surged forward without breaking stride (along with Maximum Security) while War of Will and Long Range Toddy lost all forward momentum. As Maximum Security tried to get back in his original path, he over corrected to the left, pinching Code of Honor against the rail...thus costing him a chance to win as well. These are the fouls that caused the Stewards to make the disqualification on Maximum Security...thus gifting Country House the Derby just because he was able to avoid the trouble and get 2nd place. Country House was strictly the beneficiary of Maximum Security's DQ. The race was literally just inches from disaster. And to think people are up in arms about all the deaths at Santa Anita over the winter. Can you imagine multiple horses having to be put down on the track during the most famous horse race in the world? 😳. It would have set horse racing back for heaven knows how long and would have taken the industry a long time to recover from. PR nightmare! That's always been my greatest fear with that race and why they should limit the field to 14...like EVERY other horse race does in North America except for the Derby.

Please everyone realize, that rules are rules and stewards and officials protect us. They are there in racing and all the horse disciplines to keep the playing field safe and fair. The more we appreciate and respect their tough decisions based on years of experience and training, the more our industries will thrive and keep people and horses from being hurt. Friends on Facebook do not have the trained eye nor the education to make the tough calls nor the vast experience to know that sometimes our ignorance may get us or someone else hurt. Please protect and respect our horse world and make it grow and do not give ammunition to all those that would like to shut the industries down. Eventing, hunters, jumpers and pleasure horses all benefit from the racing industry because so many of our horses were race horses in their first career.

2019 Update: At the present time, Burgundy Hollow Horse Trials has not set dates for the 2019 season. I am trying to complete a few major farm projects (not horse trials related). With the continuing excessive rainfall, I cannot yet determine how long it will take for me to complete these projects in order to devote the necessary time toward getting the courses ready. As things progress, I will keep everyone updated. Kindly, Michelle Casale

Another great day at Burgundy Hollow Horse Trials. The last cross country ride was scheduled for 2:01 and we ran so far ahead in all phases that the last horse was finished on course at 1:46. All scoring was out the door at 2:20. Thanks so much for all our awesome volunteers for making the day run so smoothly. Thank you to our wonderful sponsors (Horsemen's Outlet, Mane N Tail, Blue Bridle Insurance) for the great prizes and gifts for every rider. Congratulations to all our riders and to Team Blue Heron Farm for winning the Team Competition and to Applewood Farm for a close 2nd place.

Results have been posted. Only one ribbon and one test were not picked up and they have been sent to their rider.

Mark your calendars for Sept 16, Burgundy Hollow Horse Trials.

Ride Times for July 8 (TENTATIVE)
I need to keep working on the course and will be back in late tonight. During the event, we will take you out of order but the rider who's time it is has priority. A few photos my boyfriend took of other people.
Great event as usual..even if it didn't go as planned for me. Was there a photographer there?
What a wonderful event. Patrick and I had a wonderful time watching everyone's cross country rounds. Best moments of the day include: Ed and Chance's positive attitudes and genuine enjoyment of the course and the young girl who told her horse all about her first week of school to help keep calm. A wonderful idea and it made us smile.
Thank you for an awesome Event today! As always, the Horse Trials was exceptionally well run and fun for all.
Are we allowed to have a reader for BN dressage?
Job well done today. Thank you Michelle, Tom and kids. See you in September!
We are so sad to miss the events 😢 Abby's guy has been off and also had mild colic so he is out of shape so out of commission 😢
Does anyone know who the photographer was yesterday?
