The Vigiano brothers: James and Joseph, Jr. standing next to the painting of their father, Detective Joseph Vigiano. These men come from a long bloodline of family service to our country. James and Joe, Jr. are U.S. Marines and followed in the footsteps of the fallen 9/11 hero to become NYPD officers.

They also lost their Uncle John Vigiano, Joe’s older brother and a New York Firefighter on September 11th.

This is Navy Corpsman Max Soviak who gave his life in Afghanistan yesterday. He is one of 13 who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I pause to remember him and his service to our country. I ask you to join me in prayers for his family and for the families of all who perished or were injured yesterday.

George Washington soon realized that flying a flag that was even remotely close to the British flag was not a great confidence-builder for the revolutionary effort, so he turned his efforts towards creating a new symbol of freedom for the soon-to-be fledgling nation.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress took a break from writing the Articles of Confederation and passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Over 100 years later, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.
