Making a yummy, flavorful beef broth for the puppy's dinners this week. Bone broth is a nutritious treat for dogs, and making it in a QuickPot (or any pressure cooker) is both quick and easy! Here's how you can do it: I am roasting my beef bones at 400 degrees for 40 minutes for the best flavor and have added thyme, parsley, carrots and celery.
Ingredients:
- Raw or cooked bones (e.g., chicken, beef, turkey—avoid seasoned or spicy leftovers)
- 2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (helps extract nutrients from the bones)
- Water (enough to cover the bones by about 2 inches)
Optional Add-Ins (Safe for Dogs):
- Carrots
- Celery
- Parsley
- Turmeric (a pinch, for anti-inflammatory benefits)
Steps:
1. **Prep the Bones:** Place bones in the QuickPot. You can use a mix of meaty bones and joints (like chicken feet, marrow bones, etc.), but avoid cooked bones that might splinter.
2. **Add Ingredients:** Add the apple cider vinegar and any optional veggies or herbs. Then, pour in enough water to cover the bones by about 2 inches, but don’t exceed the pot's max fill line.
3. **Cook:** Seal the lid, set the pressure cooker to "manual" or "soup/broth" mode, and cook on high pressure for **2-3 hours**.
4. **Natural Release:** Once done, allow the pressure to release naturally. This can take about 20-30 minutes.
5. **Strain:** Carefully strain the broth to remove bones and any solids. Make sure no small bones remain, as they can be hazardous for dogs.
6. **Cool & Serve:** Let the broth cool completely before giving it to your dog. You can also refrigerate or freeze it for later.
Serving Tips:
- Serve it as a warm treat or pour it over their regular meals.
- Use small portions if introducing it for the first time, just to ensure it agrees with their tummy.
- Use with my recipes in The Ultimate Slow Cooker Dog Food for Dogs cookbook!
