DAY 3: Happy National Dairy Goat Awareness Week!
**Don't forget to enter our GIVEAWAY (see pinned post) for goat cuddles!!

Let's start by talking about breeds. There are eight dairy breeds recognized by the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) including Alpine, Lamancha, Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian, Oberhasli, Saanen, Sable, and Toggenburg. Our goat family at Chubb E. Acres Farm consists of 4 Nigerian Dwarf does, 2 doelings, 2 bucks, and a handful of kids each year. This year we had a record number with a total of 12 kids from 4 does (1 set of twins (Cedar), 2 triplets (Aspen & Clementine), and a set of quads (from our girl Patti).

Nigerian Dwarf Goats: We might be a little biased in saying this breed is the best. With being the only miniature goat breed registered by ADGA, the typical weight for both does and bucks is around 75lbs. Don’t let their size fool you though, Nigerian dwarf goats are known for good milk production (Our top milkers, Patti & Aspen, average 4.1lbs/day) and high levels of butterfat (Average is 6% - Aspen’s BF has been as high as 9.7%). Their size allows for easier handling (and cuddles) and easier to maintain their housing/pastures.

VS.

Saanen Goats: Does are typically ~135lbs and bucks are typically ~170lbs. Saanen goats are a common breed in larger, commercial goat dairy farms. They are known for high levels of milk production and a calm demeanor, making it easier to be worked in large groups. Average butterfat content is 3%. Their average milk production is 8lbs/day - but don’t forget they’re going to be eating twice the amount of hay/grain compared to a miniature breed.

Reflections of Farm Goals vs Real Reality
**Rhubarb cobbler recipe in photos**

So I wanted to share with everyone something that I think we all struggle with and not just how it relates to farming but life in general. We often judge ourselves against others instead of just accepting the now and appreciating the journey.

I’m using the rhubarb plant as my small example. We all have these huge goals when we start. We forget that we don’t have to do it all at 110% and that things don’t happen overnight. We can start small and still reap the benefits of growing your own. I wanted to have rhubarb on my farm because growing up my Dad grew it for us and every year we’d enjoy a strawberry-rhubarb pie 🥰

I transplanted a small rhubarb plant that was given to me from a friend last year - I started small and let this plant grow for a year. This year I was able to harvest 5 cups of rhubarb (once the stalks reached 12 inches) - I took this rhubarb and with store bought (gasp I know...) cherry filling and fresh strawberries I made a delicious strawberry-cherry-rhubarb cobbler. It tastes amazing and I’ve had several servings from breakfast the past 2 days....

My point of this story is that everyone always wants the instant result and then they compare themselves to others rather than just enjoying the little things....sure I’d love to have enough strawberries (we planted wild strawberries that are native to Michigan 2 years ago and we’re just now getting strawberries the size of my pinkie 😜🍓- see photos) and cherries to make this from scratch (we planted cherry trees 4 years ago & we’re just now getting only a handful of cherries 🍒) but for now....I can still have my cobbler and eat it too 😜

For this year I’ve added 3 small rhubarb transplants from my friend Lori’s house (the original rhubarb plant that she got was from her family and is over 40 years old)...hopefully I can pass on rhubarb to someone else in the future

**Credit to my friend Suzy for sharing her mother’s recipe with me and now with all of you

Cow's milk hard to digest, researcher says goat milk may be for you

DAY 2: In honor of National Dairy Goat Awareness Week lets talk about why we choose goats for our milk production on the farm....(Also don't forget to entry our GIVEAWAY - see pinned post at the top of our FB page) 🙂

When we think of dairy products, we most often think of cows. While both cows and goats provide many benefits, this week our focus is on dairy goats. Behind the scenes, goats are easier to care for and handle due to their smaller size. Oftentimes, goats are accustomed to being handled more and therefore this allows you to be a more hands-on farmer. Goats are known for being grazers (but can also clear bramble/weeds) and can be beneficial on a farm by contributing to rotational grazing.

Now let's talk about goat milk… although there are not significant differences between goat and cow milk compositions, there is a major contributor to why goat's milk might be easier for human digestion. Research studies have shown that the fat globules in goat’s milk are roughly half the size of those in cows milk. The smaller fat globules allow your body to absorb and digest goat milk protein easier than you would the protein from cow's milk. Goat’s milk also contains shorter chains of fatty acids than cow’s milk, contributing to the increased digestion and health benefits.

Researcher wants consumers to be able to have dairy options that are easy to digest and better for overall health.

It’s always bittersweet when our goat kids start to leave the farm but Malibu & Mini couldn’t have found a better home and we are so excited that they’re still local so we can watch them grow up!

And their other goat mama tee has already adopted them as her own - she definitely looks like she could be their mama 🥰

June is dairy month🥛🤍!!!

To kick it off, let’s talk goats milk...

🥛at Chubb E. Acres farm, we have four Nigerian dwarf does who are milked once daily (when not being chased by their kids). Once all of their kids have been read we will begin our twice daily milking routine. Milking is a quick process and takes roughly 5-10 minutes per doe. The girls love this time of day because it means they get their special grain mix & extra attention.

🐐Our top producer is Aspen, currently producing around 4.1 lbs of milk per a day. She hasn’t even reached her peak production yet so stay tuned! Her milk composition includes 9.9% butterfat and 2.9% protein.

🥛Goats milk includes important nutrients such as protein, vitamin D, and calcium

🐐Due to higher levels of butterfat, Nigerian dwarf’s milk is known for being smooth, creamy & produces a higher cheese yield

🥛Goats milk is often easier to digest due to the difference in protein composition and can sometimes be used as an alternative for cows milk if you have a dairy sensitivity

Celebrate dairy month with us by enjoying a cold glass of milk!

Thanks so much Melissa Lynn Holahan for my goodies. My package arrived today with all kinds of treats for my girls. Super excited 🐔🐓
This morning I was delighted to be a guest at Chubb E Acres beautiful Farm! I was able to snap a "few" photos of the incredibly sweet and silly Goats, the elegant Emu's, the glamorous Turkey's and so many more! Here's a sneak peek of all the fun. Thank you Chubb E Acres Farm ❤️👩‍🌾
I have been following this Farm for a long time and just out of the blue a few weeks back I saw that she was making homemade goat cheese spread plane or flavored so I messaged her regarding on shipping and Etc. Melissa messaged me back within 15 minutes. I'm a True Believer the things are just meant to be. We talked back and forth a few times and the crazy thing is that she is on Grosse Ile once a week weather permitting obviously this time of year. I have cancer so I have been eating organic deit . But this goes for anyone that is interested and it's not crazy expensive like organic foods can be. So I place my order and in a week she was on the island I got two of the flavored goat cheese dips I got a dozen chicken eggs a dozen of duck eggs and 15 quail eggs. Melissa was so kind to throw in a homemade soap and a free chapstick. her Packaging is very elegant I hope everyone please check this site out thank you and thank you again Melissa for all of your time❤❤
My favorite farm 😍 fresh eggs, veggies, fresh EVERYTHING! Beautiful animals loved by the greatest 😘 🐓🐾🐱🐴🦃🐣🦆🌺🌻🥒 did I miss anything? Fanzi is Adams favorite!
