Did you know that pregnant sheep and goats typically carry their young on the right side of their abdomen? Space on the left side is mostly taken up by their rumen. The rumen is a specialized part of their stomach and the largest of the four different stomach compartments.

We’ve got a saying that might help you remember this fact:
Lunch is on the left, rugrats are on the right.

Any guesses how many babies our beautiful ewe, Willa, is carrying?

We are pleased to announce on Monday, March 30th, 2020 our Registered Ewe, Hillside Eau Claire gave birth to a baby girl, Kalamazoo, Nick Name, Kali! We are so happy to see good news at the farm and are expecting another 7 sheep and 2 goats to give birth this month.

A few facts for all our guests to know about sheep:
* Since this is mom's first pregnancy, a single lamb is normal and expected;
* The Jacob sheep (unlike the Merinos) are generally instinctually good moms. We've reintroduced the rest of the flock and everyone is behaving themselves (see photo)

Looking forward to having everyone back at the farm once we can open for the season. Did you know that Maybury Farm has annual memberships available? If you and your family are frequent visitors to the Farm, especially with all the new babies that will be born at the farm over the next 4-6 weeks you might want to consider a family membership. Please call (248) 374-0200 for more details or email [email protected].

Regular Membership Fee - $60.00 for a family of 4 plus $10.00 for each additional family member. (Valid one year from the date of purchase)

All the sheep at Maybury Farm were sheared last week to prepare them for lambing and warmer weather. Our Fun Fact Friday is about shearing of the sheep. The process of shaving the wool off of sheep is called "shearing". Sheep are usually sheared once a year, before lambing or in the springtime before the onset of warm weather. Shearing doesn't hurt the sheep, it's just like getting a haircut. Watch as our professional shearer uses electric shears to skillfully remove wool in one piece!

All of us are challenged with the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on our lives. This is uncharted territory.

The animals are critically important to us as well as the community we live in. The Northville Community Foundation/Maybury Farm is about giving back to our community through agriculture and education. With the birthing season upon us at the farm we are expecting to have at least 8 new lambs, 2-3 goats(kids) and baby piglets, we need your help financially! We are taking our role in the community very seriously by being both a resource for all of you and protecting our supporters, volunteers, staff and all the animals that are here at the farm.

Our ability to provide animal care to all our animals — regardless of the environment around us —dependents on your support.

At Maybury Farm we continue to be there for all animals, we need you to continue to be there for us. Please make a gift today at https://www.mayburyfarm.org/donate

Excitement at Maybury Farm, Lulu is pregnant with Piglets due in May!

Fun Fact Friday:
Adult female pigs are called "sows". Did you know a sow has a gestation length of 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days? Check out this video of our sow, Lulu, having an ultrasound to confirm her pregnancy. We don't know how many piglets she will have, but we are looking to share these new babies with the community as soon as we can.

Fun Fact Friday!
What is making our animals "smile"?
A wide range of mammals display behavior in which they curl back their top lip exposing their top teeth/gums, inhale, and may extend their neck or lift their heads. The behavior facilitates the transfer of pheromones and other scents into the Jacobson's organ, located above the roof of the mouth.

Maybury Farm: Connecting the Community to Animals & Agriculture

Where can you and your family go to experience true farm life without leaving Northville? The answer is Maybury Farm! The Farm has been a landmark in the community for over 100 years and continues to be a wonderful destination for children and families to experience the joy and wonder of animals, agriculture, farmland and forests.

Maybury Farm is a working farm with a mission to connect the community to animals and agriculture through hands-on experiences that are both engaging and educational. Situated on 85 acres of farmland and forest, the opportunities to enjoy and learn about Michigan farming, agriculture and habitats is endless!

On the Farm we care for dozens of farm animals who provide opportunities to teach kids about the role of animals in providing food and fiber, a U-Pick farm garden full of fresh veggies, a farm-themed playground, large picnic area, and a General Store with delicious eats and gifts including Michigan-made maple syrup and honey from our Maybury Farm honeybee hives!

Maybury Farm offers educational tours that are enjoyed by thousands of children from all over Southeast Michigan each year. Our tours are designed to integrate with Michigan science standards - but don't tell that to the kids! We want them to have such fun, hands-on experiences that they don't even realize we are teaching them science!

Throughout the year, the Farm offers a variety of events and activities for people of all ages. From our Making Maple Syrup tours in March, Farm Fest in June, Farm Camp for kids ages 5-12, Great Pumpkin Festival and Corn Maze in the fall, and Santa Visits in December, there is always an exciting event to look forward to at Maybury Farm!

Maybury Farm is operated by the Northville Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Farm receives no tax dollars to operate and relies on the support and generosity of our guests, donors, and corporate sponsors to operate and provide quality educational programming and engaging events for families.

We appreciate your support of Maybury Farm. Join us this season and grow with us!
