This weekend, Global Table had yet another outstanding meal at Autre Monde on Roosevelt Rd in Berwyn ... Foodies far & wide are arriving for the gracious ambiance, fine wines and dishes prepared by two ex-Spiaggia chefs (amusingly named Chefs Pancake and Partridge). A few of Global Table's favorite dishes: Brick Roasted Chicken with Root Vegetables & Kale, Lobster Chitarra, and the Pork Porterhouse with Escarole & White Bean. Happy Oscar Night!

Found a great bargain red wine this weekend, a really, really great $10 bottle. The name is exceedingly long: Chateau de Pena "Cuvee de Pena Rouge" Vin de Pays des Pyrenees-Orientales 2009. The cooperative is in the Southernmost part of France, thirty kiometers North of the Spanish border, close to the Balearic Sea. This is a big blend of Grenache (40%), Syrah (40%) and Carignan (20%) that serves up blackberry and plum flavors and clocks in at a healthy 14.3% alcohol.

After tasting this, I looked up what Robert Parker had to say - love him or hate him, the guy knows his stuff. Parker called Cuvee de Pena "simply the finest of its illustrious breed that I have tasted (and I go back 20 years with this cuvee...)" and "we wine snobs need to stick this into some blind tastings to put quality-price rapport into perspective, and perhaps put some prejuduces to rest." I'll drink to that!

In the words of the immortal Keith Floyd, welcome fellow gastronauts! Many of us have extensive cookbook collections and, with passing years, memory fades a bit (with nouns being the especially difficult bit to recall). To help, I'm using eatyourbooks.com, a terrific website that finds exactly where a particular recipe resides in your bookshelf. It contains indices of over 70,000 books and magazines (i.e. Saveur, the late, lamented Gourmet, Cook's Illustated). Once you recall the main component(s) of a dish, it guides you to the book that contains the recipe! Or, should you desire to deal with the 4 lbs of boneless short ribs, parsnips and rutabagas lurking in the fridge, simply type in those ingredients and you'll get recipes to use the surplus. Brilliant!
So how do you enter all of your cookbook titles? With a smartphone and barcode scanner app (for ex, iPhone's free RedLaser) it's falling-off-a-log-simple. Scan the barcodes, email them home, copy them into eatyourbooks.com and Bob's your uncle. It's incredibly cheap at $25 / year, but message me and I'll give you a code for a three month free trial... No ties to this site, just a fan!

A centerpiece defines space, creates focus and complements the expansive cuisine of Global Table. We love dramatic, asian influenced floral combinations, but also enjoy simple, beautifully arranged traditional blooms.

Known for his expertise in evoking centuries of tradition within American, Italian, and Pan-Asian cultures, Chef Marc Chodera works with each client to develop a menu that perfectly addresses their vision for each singular event.

"Marc’s cuisine and meals are an event for all of a diner’s five senses! He has a gift of immersing his customers in the full flavor of the food, from how he crafted a recipe (probably through his global travels) to the name of the local vendor that supplies an organic ingredient to the perfect wine to complement the course. I always come away from Global Table events with the warm feeling of a memorable meal. I walk away hungry to to share all that I learned from him during that evening." - River Forest client
