Well, it's officially a building project now.

We got the two center frames up on our new farm workshop and storage building with some family help.

There's still plenty to do — the end frames, purlins, walls, and everything that comes after that — but the hardest part is getting started and getting those center frames standing.

From here, things should move a little quicker.

It's not much yet, but it's a start.

Sometimes being a farmer means spying on your cows and catching signs of heat.
But lucky me that means I get to witness all the drama that goes with it. It's like my own little soap opera.
May is a heifer that we are breeding for the first time.

Previously on… As the Herd Turns.

Maybelle was not pregnant.

So we went searching for standing heat.

This time, we decided to take a different approach…

We went natural.

A new technician. A new plan. And, hopefully, a new beginning for May.

Though judging by her new look, Maybelle appears to be going through a bit of a… reinvention. 😂

Hay in her horns, Angus by her side, and apparently no interest in doing things the easy way.

Meanwhile, the results are in for Constance.

And sadly…

She is NOT pregnant.

After being bred to the same bull as Marilyn, who is expecting, Constance’s storyline has taken a very different turn.

And now we have to ask…

Is Constance ready to retire?

She didn’t calve last year.

Could it have been because she got to keep her first calf, Cherry Blossom, by her side?

Cherry Blossom is now a year old—and we’ve decided to keep her in the herd to become a future mama herself.

Was Constance simply enjoying motherhood a little too much?

Or is there something more going on?

One thing is certain…

Marilyn is expecting.

Maybelle has an Angus.

Cherry Blossom is waiting in the wings.

And Constance’s future hangs in the balance.

Will Constance get one more chance?
Will Maybelle and her new beau produce a calf?
And who will become the next leading lady of the herd?

These tomatoes are more than just a harvest.

These pink heirloom tomatoes came from my very first garden here on our property, and I’ve been saving the seeds so I can keep growing them year after year.

Seed saving is one of those simple homesteading skills that can make your garden a little more self-sufficient. Instead of buying new seeds every season, you can save seeds from the plants that already grow well for you.

And for me, there’s something pretty special about planting a seed from a tomato that grew in my very first garden and watching that same variety continue here years later.

This is the kind of homesteading I love: small things that slowly make our family a little more self-sufficient.

It's a legacy. Something to be inherited. Something to be remembered by.

Raising a bunch of hobbits around here.

Tell me it’s breakfast without telling me it’s breakfast. The cows have already gathered in the barn, and apparently everyone has decided that making as much noise as possible (Mary!) and staring me down is the best way to remind me that breakfast is late.

This is what preserving the harvest looks like for a busy mom.

I don't always have an entire day to spend preserving food. Sometimes I just cut up the carrots, blanch them, freeze them on a sheet pan, and portion them into individual bags.

Then I can use them as needed or save up enough for a larger canning day later.

Preserving the harvest doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes you just work with the time you have.

There’s something satisfying about cutting a fresh batch of lavender laundry soap.
