It takes a village to do anything worth doing. Even though you may do a lot of tasks alone as a business owner, the journey is never complete without help. Sometimes, specific help is needed. Mentorship has been crucial in my journey. Hereโ€™s how I found help.

๐Ÿ‘€ ๐‹๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐š๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐. There are likely people around you that are running successful businesses. Reach out and ask questions! Even folks you donโ€™t know directly like the owner of your favorite local clothing shop, food store, restaurant, etc. It doesnโ€™t hurt to reach out to people you admire for a 30 minute coffee. I got my first food role in part from talking to someone at a coffee shop after overhearing them talk about vegan cookie dough. You never know what will happen when you put yourself out there!

Personally, I like to look at networking as making friends. I do my best to find the folks I get along with genuinely first when Iโ€™m in a new environment. Not everyone meshes though, and thatโ€™s fine too. For other folks, I keep it pleasant. If I know I specifically want to chat with someone, I make time to introduce myself and treat it similarly. Itโ€™s always better to try and connect in a real way. Weโ€™re all just people after all.

Especially when youโ€™re reaching out to someone for the first time, remember to be polite! That means make sure your ask is concise and any meeting you request is no longer than 30 minutes. If youโ€™re meeting them in person, go to them. Or offer to do a phone / video chat. Some people may even prefer to answer questions over email. Since theyโ€™re doing you a favor by giving you their time, make sure to make it as easy as possible for them!

If you find someone whose opinion you really value, you can always pay for their time so you can meet with them more regularly and go more in depth. If itโ€™s not a mentor youโ€™ve met, it may be a leadership coach for those building their first team and you just need more support. So many of the best leaders I know have gone through some form of coaching. You donโ€™t need to muddle through every step of building a business alone.

What are you looking for support for these days?

This year's full size mooncake gift set has our first ever coffee flavored mooncake: The White Chocolate Latte! In the past, we've made a lot of tea-flavored mooncakes. This year, we thought we'd add another beloved caffeine fix to the menu. Here's a sneak peek at how we make our espresso powder that goes into each and every mooncake. Starting with -- espresso from Mr. Espresso in Oakland!

This business has changed so much since I first started five and a half years ago. I've been both lucky and have worked hard to continue growing Little Moon Bakehouse through all these changes. Here's how I did it.

๐ŸŽงI listened intuitively to what customers were telling me. Since I first started people were asking me if I could ship to them from across the country. So I took that as a goal early on. I threw an event as a fluke but people showed up. This combined with starting to make bread and the tea party was born ๐Ÿซ–๐Ÿต. People will always show you what they want, you just have to keep your eyes and ears open to what theyโ€™re communicating.

โœจI doubled down on where opportunities seemed to be pointing me. While individuals sometimes have a bias against plant based foods, I was met with excitement from large corporations that we made vegan items. It allowed them to cater to all their employees needs during celebrations. So these days I know when to highlight it plant based nature and when to focus on our other value adds.

โญI listened to all feedback carefully, both positive and constructive to find the grains of truth and direction in both. No matter what the issue I hear from a customer, I always try to reflect on what there saying, not necessarily how they're saying it. This helps me grow and always improve.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธI was willing to change how I executed my mission without compromising my principles. When we rebranded, we stopped using the word vegan. After three years if being a vegan forward business, it was obvious that there unfortunately still a bias against food associated with the word. But none of our products changed. And they won't. Because we will always be dedicated to creating vegan versions of nostalgic Asian pastries.

๐Ÿ“I reached out for guidance and mentorship whenever I felt stuck. At each inflection point, I've asked for help from someone further along than me to gain perspective on next steps. This entire post actually came to be from a conversation with a mentor reminding me to give myself credit for bring able to pivot and grow through the years. S/o to of for your awesome guidance. And to for introducing us years ago.

If you're struggling to figure out what is working, keep throwing that ๐Ÿ against the wall! You can do it ๐Ÿ’ช
