Kira K Designs

Kira K Designs Knitting and crochet patterns from Kira K Designs present a streamlined aesthetic featuring clean lines and interesting details. Hello!

Kits featuring indie dyed yarn make it easy to complete a successful project, and Kira teaches in the SF Bay Area and beyond. My name is Kira Dulaney and I have been designing knitting and crochet patterns since 2006, and selling kits since 2011. My kits pair my original patterns with beautiful hand-dyed yarns from a variety of indie dyers. When I design a new pattern, I start with a yarn that I love and then figure out how to show it to its best advantage - for me it all starts with amazing yarn! Kira K Designs patterns have a streamlined and eminently wearable aesthetic, and with over one hundred knitting and crochet designs in a range of skill levels, you’re sure to find a garment or accessory that you’ll love to create. Kits with indie dyed yarn and any necessary notions make it even easier to knit or crochet a successful and stunning project. I have been teaching fiber arts classes and hosting crafty events in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond since 2002. I grew up exploring various crafts and sharing skills with friends, and worked in both a fabric shop and a yarn shop which inspired me to try new techniques and experiment with all kinds of projects. I love collaborating with other crafty small business owners, teaching new skills to students, and bringing groups to visit my favorite yarn shops and fiber farms. You can also connect on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Ravelry, and feel free to tag in any posts about projects made with my designs. I live in Oakland with my wife and two dogs, all of whom cameo on social media posts from time to time. https://linktr.ee/kirakdesigns

My favorite event is coming up next weekend! Lambtown Festival is celebrating 40 years and it’s continuing to grow, becoming better every year.

As a vendor I’ll have a booth in Denverton Hall with lots of knitting and crochet kits featuring my patterns and favorite yarns, embroidery kits, mending looms, and useful tools. A few kits are new and I’m busy restocking others for a nice selection of colors. My booth will also host the Craft Among Friends giveaway which is larger than ever with 15 participating vendors!

I’m on the board of directors and will spend a couple days preparing the fairgrounds and especially the classrooms. Each morning I get to greet students and direct them to their workshops. Many are sold out but there are still so many great options across a wide range of fiber arts and skill levels.

I donated a pattern for each rider on the Wool on Wheels bus, chartered from four locations in the Bay Area to provide a cushy ride to the festival. The value of the goodie bag plus festival admission means the bus is practically free!

Low income discounts are available for both the bus and workshops, and there’s a great deal on admission for just Sunday afternoon. You can also sign up for a volunteer shift to get admission, a t-shirt, a merch discount, and a goodie bag, plus gratitude for helping put on this wonderful event!

I’ve restocked my Little Sparrow Shawl kits, with a full range of colors including neutrals, moody deep shades, and bright colors. This tencel yarn from teresa ruch has a luminous effect and the hand-dyed colors set off the lace and textured pattern on the shawl beautifully.

I recently saw Charlene of Charlene Payne Schmid and restocked my Tracery Cowl kits including a new sage green naturally dyed with Gallardia. The natural grey is so pretty, and gives a muted depth to the dyed colors, while the three-ply construction shows the stitch pattern wonderfully.

A box of Alex mending looms just arrived from Ukraine so now the 21 hook looms are back in stock, perfect for weaving larger patches or using finer threads. My kits include samples of yarns and threads on a magnetic holder from Maria Isabel , two long needles, a needle threader, and instructions from both Alex and I.

I’ll have all of these at Lambtown Festival and socalfiberfair and they’re already available on my website with free shipping for orders over $100.

Every rider on the Wool on Wheels bus to Lambtown Festival will get a pattern from me plus a coupon for a discount in my booth. The value of these amazing goodie bags plus included admission means the ride to the festival is basically free! Low income discounts are available if it’s still out of reach for anyone.

Here’s what I brought home from DFW Fiber Fest

Plain Weave issue of WEFT Magazine

Project bag from Positively Yarnie which Jeananne kindly broke out from a kit since it’s the last of this fabric

Mini skein set of wool/silk yarn from Red Door Fibers which is planned for a new crochet pattern and clearly needs to live in that perfectly matching project bag

Flicker cover from Aunt Steph’s Handmade Gifts to restrain the Clemes & Clemes, Inc. flicker which threatens to poke me every time I reach into my box of spinning tools.

Stickers from PURL Magazine and Positively Yarnie

Teacher swag bag with adorable colored pencil set in a box with a ruler lid, pin, try-on tubing, and tape measure.

So many great memories from connecting with fiber friends to witnessing “aha moments” from my students.

Oh my gosh, I had the best time at DFW Fiber Fest and also I am so exhausted! 4.5 days, 6 classes, over 120 students, and connections with too many fiber friends to count.

I stole the action shot of me teaching drop spindle spinning from Jeniece Lusk Jeniece. The collages are student work mostly from needle felting but also creative tapestry weaving and visible mending. Everyone was so enthusiastic and creative and, very importantly, kind to themselves while learning new skills.

An early alarm and non-stop flight and I arrived in Texas for DFW Fiber Fest which kicks off tomorrow!

I often bring knitting or crochet on planes, and alternate with reading (or do both if it’s easy knitting) but this time I packed embroidery in my carry on. I’m on track to finish in time to wear this dress when teaching one of my Visible Mending sessions!

I’ve already stitched a bee and some flowers over worn areas near the pockets, and this butterfly is covering up a stain. The stick-and-stitch pattern is from By Hand Craft Co • Rosanna and I’ll fill in the outline with a 🌈 sashiko thread.

See all that luggage? Those bags are 95% full of materials for my six classes with over 120 students. It’s going to be a busy and wonderful four days!

Are you excited for Lambtown Festival in just over six weeks? I sure am! It’s been my favorite event for over a decade and I spend most of the year preparing for it along with other dedicated volunteers (shout out to Roy Clemes & Clemes, Inc. Brooke Brooke Sinnes and Rijel Rijel Lewis for being an awesome team)

This is the 40th annual festival and it’ll be bigger than ever with more workshops, vendors, busses, activities. There are lots of competitions and demonstrations to watch, plus meetups to connect with other crafters. You’ll definitely want to come for more than one day and can even camp onsite and wake up to sheepy sounds.

I’m a board member, the workshop chair, and Wool on Wheels bus organizer. This past weekend I spent a day with about fifty volunteers preparing student and volunteer swag bags and Wooly Adventures activity materials.

I’m teaching my full day version of Visible Mending, where we have time to explore needle felting, woven patches with Speedweve looms, and embroidery to turn rips and stains into opportunities for creative embellishment. The full day gives us time to practice, play, and dive deeper into trickier techniques, and there’s still some room to join.

I’ll also be a vendor with lots of knitting and crochet kits plus useful tools and By Hand Craft Co • Rosanna embroidery kits. I’m also part of the largest Craft Among Friends giveaway of the year with an awe-inspiring prize which will be displayed in my booth in Denverton Hall.
