Yes, hold yourself accountable.

Yes, hold yourself accountable.

If you want to make progress as a horseman, you have to hold yourself accountable.
An instructor can tell you to open your left rein, but only you can actually open your left rein! I can tell you to step right. I can tell you to step right more, or reword it until you do it enough that your right seat bone drops down where it belongs. I can remind you to do it every 30 seconds. I can remind you again every time we change directions, or change gaits, or after your horse tripped. But none of my riders take a lesson with me every day! At some point you have to remember it and execute it all on your own. And isn’t that the type of rider you want to be???
I mean, When you are doing a dressage test, I can’t remind you to sit back in the corner or to not over bend the neck in the shoulder in.

The only time I am the head trainer is when I am instructing myself. Otherwise, I am always the assistant instructor and YOU, THE RIDER, HAVE to be your own master. I am merely the Layman who tells you where we are at in this project, and what step needs to happen next. You are the lead contractor who needs to make sure it gets done. (I know enough people who have major projects going on at their facility that maybe this is a really bad example! Lol but you get my drift hopefully)

I’m not sure how I made it through the levels as far as I did knowing how long it took me to get accountable on actually keeping my inside rein open 🤦‍♀️. Now I’ve realized how often I, just for a moment, open my outside rein when I’m supposed to be using my inside leg. I’m NOT letting this habit go on for years. I’m not. I’m not. I’m not working on anything else until I’m so consciously competent when I do allow my subconscious to take over, it sticks! Even then, I’ll be checking in regularly.

I had an adult student say that she’s always ride with puppy paws/piano hands (thumbs turned in, fingernails posted down) and “good luck changing it”. My tone was light hearted, because that’s who I am, but I basically told her that if she can’t hold herself accountable for something so easy to fix, get off the horse- why bother! It helped that I gave her the REASONS why it was important- it isn’t just to be pretty. But fixing it was hard for her because it’s so tough to turn her wrist- it was “hard” because it took focus.
Put in the focus. Hold yourself accountable.

What is collection truly?
Collection is not a head set, it is not “tucking the chin” and it is not the restraining of the head and squeezing of the body.

To simplify, collection is the availability of the horse’s body. It is the ability of the hind limbs to bear weight equally and of the shoulders to be free, supple, and directable.

You cannot simply get this by bringing the horse’s chin in, you cannot get this by simply squeezing the horse via the legs into a restraining hand, and you cannot get this with tie downs, side reins, Martingales, or other restrictive gear. Muscles cannot be supple by method of any restrictive positioning - muscles must be stretched, posture must be changed, the horse must be released, relaxed, and given time to understand and develop.

The only way to develop collection is through systematic athletic development over time. It is not done in a weekend clinic or even in several months. It is done by an educated seat and hand, and adherence to classical principles - guiding the horse toward equal weight bearing hind limbs and straightness through the body. This is the essence of classical dressage - the development of the horse as an athlete and partner, and to enhance his natural ability and create longevity and wellbeing.

I love this!

I love this!

The saddest thing I’ve ever seen…
Is a woman on a horse
that does not believe she is good enough to be there.

Do not compare yourself. There is only this moment, this horse. Your hands, seat, voice and leg, define the parameters of the entire world for this horse.

What anyone else is doing, or has ever done, does NOT matter.
Whomever it is that you look up to — or feel less than —
Is in turn, looking up to another rider, wishing to aspire to that level. So be content where you are… You are blessed!

YOU are your only competition… Just be better today than you were yesterday. Try hard for this horse you ride and try hard for yourself. Most of all, enjoy this time; Every moment. Every stride. Every cue that is answered with a response.

Cherish this partnership…
Know, that you are exactly where you are supposed to be…

What an exciting and crazy summer it has been!
Congratulations to everyone for all your hard work. Plus a huge thank you for the people behind the scene especially my husband Mark Kaufman who help me get ready for the shows and watch the farm while I am away. Without you I could not make this happen!

Results for Cobblestone-
Rory Frangos and Ruby Slippers- 9th BN
Zoe Porbin and Stone the Devil- an unfortunate elimination in show jumping but an excellent cross country round with only one refusal. BN
Motif and I- BNH finishing on our dressage score in 4th place

Results for Waredaca-
Rory Frangos and Ruby Slippers- Finishing on her dressage score in 2nd place in a VERY tough BN division.
Zoe Porbin and Stone the Devil- BN After an absolutely brilliant show jump round, Zoe and Stone were eliminated on cross country. This course eliminated almost 3/4 of their division.
Motif and I- This was our first recognized Novice. With a 28.3 dressage we added 1 rail to finish in 6th.

American Eventing Championships-
Motif and I finished on our dressage score of 35.8 in 13th place out of 31 horses in BNH division. She is going to get some well deserved down time in preparation for next year :)

Stone Gate
Rory Frangos and Ruby Slippers made their debute at Novice level. Even though it was a little rocky they finished with 12 jump faults in show jump( she had a brilliant save at fence 2) and 1 stop on cross country. I'm so proud of how far these 2 have come!
Zoe Porbin and Stone the Devil put all the pieces together this weekend and finished in 5th place on her dressage score in BN. Super proud of how these two have developed their partnership this year!
Emily Moore and Phoenix- Finished with one rail landing them in 7th place in the starter division. These two have really made huge steps this year. Looking forward to seeing them go BN next year :)
Piper and I finished in 6th place in the OP division. We are working on relaxation in dressage and keeping rails up in show jumping. The cross country is progressing every time out. This is the first time she was 100% focused with the job at had. Still a few time faults but we are getting closer.

We have just a few more show to go to this season.

This years show season has started off well for the riders at Pegasus Farm.
A big congratulations to Zoe for her 4th place Finish on Derby in the starter division at Winona HT. She worked so hard with this pony to finally finish on a number and in the ribbons!
Finishing on her dressage score and in 7th place in the BN division was Rory and Captain Jack. Piper and I finished in 5th place in the OP division and Mika won her 3yr old FEH division with a qualifying score for the championships this fall.

Seneca Valley marked the debut of Zoe and her new horse Stone the Devil at BN. They had a great dressage test, double clear show jump. The cross country is a work in progress because they are getting used to each other. She came off the course grinning from ear to ear which speaks volumes!
Also completing Seneca Valley in the OBN division was Motif who finished on her dressage score in 3rd place.
Stone Gate Mini results were Motif winning her OBN division. She is getting more confident and hopefully will move up to Novice by the end of the season. Also, Zoe place 5th in Starter division on Stone with a double clear cross country round and will be moving up to BN at South Farm in a few weeks!
Looking forward to having a fun, productive and safe continuation to the show season :)
Congratulations guys!
