Some facts about the Aéroport International Toussaint Louverture in Haiti.

Pres. Francois Duvalier oversaw the building of the airport but he did not initiate the concept. BIG DIFFERENCE!
Since he was President, they named it after him which made people think he built it. The idea nor the funds did not come from his administration.

The Toussaint Louverture International Airport (formerly Port-au-Prince International Airport and François Duvalier International Airport) in Port-au-Prince was built with a mix of funding. The initial development of Bowen Field, located near Chancerelles, was primarily by the USMC, and the current airport, further northeast, was developed with funding from
the US government and Haitian people. The renaming of the airport to honor Toussaint Louverture, a key figure in Haiti's independence, took place after the Duvalier regime fell.

Pres. Francois Duvalier - Ruled - 1957–1971 - 14 years
Died in office

After he became President, (1957) he sent most of his political opponent (Dejoie) supporters into exile. In 1958 a group of mercenaries attempted to overthrow him, they were all killed.
In 1959, he created a rural militia called the Tonton Macoute to spy on anyone who says anything negative about him. In 1963, he held an election where he was the sole person on the ballot. He accepted the will of the people even though the ballots were already pre-checked. The NYTimes called it the most outrageous election in Latin America. He changed the Haitian flag from blue and red to black and red. In 1964, he published a cathechism, rewording the Lord’s Prayer to praise Duvalier instead of God. In 1966, he hosted the only foreign Head of State to visit Haiti under his reign. The Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I. He appropriated $15 million dollars annually the US was giving to Haiti. The money was transferred to his personal account.

There’s lots more but I will let you do your own research.

Haiti did not have a National Anthem until 1904. One hundred years after its independence. Haiti does not have a Pledge of Allegiance .

The National Anthem in French and English!

The Anthem is called the La Dessalinienne, named after Jean Jacques Dessalines.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Haitian Revolution a competition was held for a national anthem in 1903. The poetic words of Justin L’herisson and martial composition of Nicolas Geffrard won over the judges, who preferred it.
It was officially adopted as the national anthem in 1904.

Hymne National (La Dessalinienne)
I
Pour le Pays, pour les Ancêtres Marchons unis, marchons unis Dans nos rangs point de traîtres
Du sol soyons seuls maîtres
Marchons unis, marchons unis
Pour le Pays, pour les Ancêtres
Marchons, marchons, marchons unis
Pour le Pays, pour les Ancêtres
II
Pour les Aïeux, pour la Patrie
Bêchons joyeux, bêchons joyeux
Quand le champ fructifie
L’âme se fortifie
Bêchons joyeux, bêchons joyeux
Pour les Aïeux, pour la Patrie
Bêchons, bêchons, bêchons joyeux
Pour les Aïeux, pour la Patrie
III
Pour le Pays et pour nos Pères
Formons des Fils, formons des Fils
Libres, forts et prospères
Toujours nous serons frères
Formons des Fils, formons des Fils
Pour le Pays et pour nos Pères
Formons, formons, formons des Fils
Pour le Pays et pour nos Pères
IV
Pour les Aïeux, pour la Patrie
O Dieu des Preux, O Dieu des Preux
Sous ta garde infinie
Prends nos droits, notre vie
O Dieu des Preux, O Dieu des Preux
Pour les Aïeux, pour la Patrie
O Dieu, O Dieu, O Dieu des Preux
Pour les Aïeux, pour la Patrie
V
Pour le Drapeau, pour la Patrie
Mourir est beau, mourir est beau
Notre passé nous crie:
Ayez l’âme aguerrie
Mourir est beau, mourir est beau
Pour le Drapeau, pour la Patrie
Mourir, mourir, mourir est beau
Pour le Drapeau, pour la Patrie
