Rome wasn't built in a day. Apparently, neither is a farm. 😂
But damn! It feels good to look around and see how far this place has come.
When I took over this property, it was w**ds from property line to property line. And not cute little w**ds either. We're talking 10 to 14 feet tall. That first year, there wasn't much glamorous about what I was doing. I spent an unbelievable amount of time manually removing Russian thistle, milk thistle, burdock, alfalfa, bindw**d, tuber grasses, and whatever else had spent years happily claiming this ground as its own.
I wasn't really building a farm just yet. I was too busy uncovering one.
The second year, I finally got to start putting some bones underneath the vision. Water systems went in. Storage buildings went up. Driveways and parking areas started taking shape. Slowly, this empty, overgrown piece of ground started functioning like a place where something much bigger could happen.
By year three, it was time to grow.
I partnered with Roberts Ranch Hoophouses and suddenly four beautiful high tunnels were standing where those towering w**ds used to be. We prepped the ground, built out production space, and started putting this land to work.
And this year has been different. We have had the opportunity to focus on creating curb appeal.
I've been planting herbs, native plants, ground covers, and landscaping that will make the farm more beautiful while still making sense for a working farm. And because I believe pretty strongly when it comes to supporting local businesses, I shopped local first. Willard Bay Gardens supplied a huge selection of localscaping plants and herbs, and I found a bunch of beautiful native plants and ground covers at Valley Nursery Inc.-Utah
There's still dirt. There are still w**ds. There are still projects everywhere I look, because apparently farms never actually reach the mythical state known as "finished."
But when I thunk on where we started and then look at this place today, I'm incredibly proud of it.
Four years ago, I was standing in w**ds taller than me. I cannot wait to invite you out to see!
