Chicken stampede!!!

Morning update on our random overnight visitor at TKwood farm and garden.......
Last night around 7 pm we had a unknown visitor check into the farm and seem to disappear. Concerns for her safety during the great chicken stampede were immediately dismissed since the chickens were already on roost. However, the Guinea hen flock seemed to act a little suspicious and Mrs Magan Bell verified the situation's weirdness. Kristy Sams Couch was convinced she had been eaten by Willow the pig and volunteered to conduct baby goat kiss interrogations to uncover any wittness. Brenda Logan suggested a thorough search of Stella's "she shed" which determined Stella to be Bud's only true love. Marie Harper sent out a strong warning to this stranger that she could be bitten by our wiener dog protector. The horses said they were nervous about where she might be but come morning we determined she was just attending a local wedding. Best wishes and congratulations to the happy couple. We wish you many years of happiness from us and all our critters! So happy your guests found time to check into our farm while celebrating your happy day.

Anyone who knows us should know Kristyna and I love our chickens! For me it's a love my Pawpaw placed many years ago but for Kristyna it began about 5 years ago when we went to purchase some young Rhode Island Reds from a friend. There were around 100 of them to pick from. All fat healthy hens with bright feathers just ready to lay eggs. Then getting trampled among them was one smaller hen all dirty with a deformed back which we guessed to be a leg pulled out of socket. She didn't walk well and was off balance leaning to one side. A big hump had formed on 1 side of her back due to the injury and held her wing slightly out of place. She most likely wouldn't live long and if she did probably wouldn't ever lay an egg.
We picked out 12 good looking hens that day and #13 to come home with us would be named humpy. I expected to bury her within the week. Over the past 5 years we've lost almost all of those original hens. A few became egg bound, others a raccoon took out, and not long ago the neighbors dog got a few more. However all the while our little humpy remained. She wobbled around happily and faithfully laid us pretty brown eggs to eat. Rocky the rooster even found her quite attractive despite her challenges.
Yesterday humpy laid us an egg like always but she couldn't make it up into the nest, instead she laid it on the ground inside the coop. This morning we gave our sweet girl some extra love and this afternoon she gained a brand new set of wings. Rest in peace humpy! You were a good chicken!!
