Euterpe Farms - Ojai Valley Native Plants and Music Ojai Valley Native Plants and Music. We are an educator and private supplier of Ojai Valley native plant varietals for landscaping and education.

Euterpe Farms is a 5-acre native plant farm located in the heart of the Ojai Valley overlooking the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy's Ventura River Preserve and the Los Padres National Forest. The Farm is a monarch butterfly sanctuary and has the largest concentration of native milkweed in the area. There is an honor system "tienda" or roadside stand that sometimes has a sample of some special nativ

e plants, and a popular water spigot where you can get a free drink of water for you and your pet, or fill a bottle for a modest donation. There is a coin slot on the stone water fountain and an information bulletin board. We strongly support music and the arts, both through Farm events and our recording studio, Euterpe Studios…also the recording home for the farm hosts and music group “Smitty and Julija.” Monthly, in the warm months, we provide the venue for the Euterpe Farms Concert Series, a free live local music event at sunset at the Tienda Stage under the oaks by the windmill. Please enjoy the postings and photography on this site (produced by Smitty West, musician and owner of the Farm)

OK Folks...this is when you want to get your native plants started in SoCal.

It's been a really strange and rare rainfall year....VERY late but nice and wet and gentle. My prediction is we will see a lot of our dormant seed bank bust out over the next month.

Get your root sensitives, your cuttings, your seeds in the ground this week...preferably before Thursday. The ground is already wet to about 8 inches...and the 2-4 gentle inches of water we get this week will pe*****te to over 24".

Matilija Poppy Rhizomes...get them in. We have them for $25- pickup to order...should not be out of the ground for more than 24 hours.

California poppy seeds....sow them NOW! The birds will be laying low for a few days, and Thursday's rain will cover them perfectly.

Any sages should go in this week. If you have greenhouse supplied...just slice the bottom of the pot and plant the whole damn thing in the ground. The plastic will be gone in 10 years and the roots will thank you.

Find a branch of coyote brush that still has white seed tufts from along the road, and shake it onto any recently disturbed ground. Mulefat too.

Sunflower seeds...go for it. Use native, but even if you plant the stupid burpees ones, they will cross with our natives and give you some weird cross polinnated surprises over the next few years as nature settles! But put in California bush sunflower...the safest and best birdfeeder you can offer.

Enjoy your garden and mother nature will be cheering for you this week.

I forgot to mention milkweed! NOT that tropical sh*t...don't you dare. I have some seeds if you want some.

A love note to our stewards of fresh, clean water…

Thank you for drinking our waters.

Consider spending a moment with this beautiful poem…

“It is said that before entering the sea, the river trembles with fear.
She looks back at the path she has traveled, from the peaks of the mountains, the long winding road, crossing forests and villages.

And in front of her, she sees an ocean so vast, that to enter there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.

But there is no other way.

The river can not go back.

Nobody can go back.

To go back is impossible in existence.

The river needs to take the risk of entering the ocean, because only then will fear disappear, because that’s where the river will know…
…it’s not about disappearing into the ocean…
…but of becoming the ocean.

Khalil Gibran

Thank you for being part of our Euterpe Farms community. The water is ours, not mine.

Love, Smitty.
