At ten years old, Dolly Parton was earning her own money, carrying crumpled dollar bills home to put food on the table for twelve brothers and sisters.

Her uncle, Bill Owens, saw something in her early on. He drove her along the winding mountain roads out of Sevierville to radio stations in Knoxville, eventually landing her spots on WIVK and the local Cas Walker Show. She stood up to those early microphones with an acoustic guitar, singing for audiences she could not see.

The pay was just a few loose bills tucked into an envelope, but Dolly held that cash tightly in her hand on the bus rides back to the cabin. Back home, where Lee and Avie Lee Parton struggled to feed fourteen mouths, that money meant sacks of flour, lard, and sugar. Instead of buying candy or clothes, she handed every dollar straight to her mother.

By thirteen, those radio broadcasts opened the door to Goldband Records, where she cut her first single, "Puppy Love." While her classmates depended on their parents for basic needs, Dolly paid for her own school supplies, bought her own clothes, and helped knock down family grocery debts.

Music had stopped being a childhood game on the porch; it had become a practical way to keep her family afloat. The contracts, the long drives with Uncle Bill, and the way those early Knoxville radio broadcasts turned into a regional stepping stone formed the groundwork for everything she later built in Nashville.
