Today, I found myself in Shawnee, Oklahoma, at one of Oklahoma’s own Boom a Rang diners. These diners offer a nostalgic experience, transporting you back in time from breakfast all day to an authentic old-fashioned hamburger joint. The friendly wait staff ensures a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and you can even indulge in an old-fashioned milkshake. While traveling across Oklahoma, make sure to stop at one of these diners and let them know that the Oklahoma country boy food critic sent you. Today, I found myself on a delightful journey down US 69 in southeast Oklahoma. In the charming town of Kiowa, about twenty miles south of McAlester, I stumbled upon a hidden gem called Nichols Cafe. This little restaurant on the west side of the highway is a true Southern delight!

Nichols Cafe is renowned for its mouthwatering catfish, which comes with two sides and toast. Let me tell you, it’s some of the best catfish I’ve had in Southeast Oklahoma. It may not be a five-star restaurant, but in Kiowa, Oklahoma, it holds a special place in the hearts of locals as their five-star culinary destination.

The hospitality at Nichols Cafe is simply exceptional. You’ll be greeted with warm smiles and affectionate terms like “Dear” or “Sweetheart” from the friendly staff. They serve some of the best sweet tea in the region, and the dinners are simply divine.

If you ever find yourself on US 69 in southern Oklahoma, make sure to stop by Nichols Cafe. Tell them the Oklahoma Country Boy Food Critic sent you. I wholeheartedly recommend giving them five stars!
