My bees died a couple years ago and I finally decided to try again. Prepping and cleaning up the old hive was really interesting. Clearly they had too much space between the frames and decided to draw out their own comb.
The hives are going into the freezer for 4 days to kill off pests and then it'll be time to try again!

Slowly getting back to post holiday normal. Hope you and yours all had a beautiful holiday season!
Now dreaming of spring, longer days, and less rain.

Meet my friend, the ten-lined June beetle, sometimes called the watermelon beetle. She spent 2-3 years in the larval stage before emerging as her fabulous self. They have lamellate antennae, with flattened plates at the end, the better for detecting a mate's pheromones. They hiss to warn off predators or when placed on a shirt to be worn as a broach.
Despite being a common insect in the PNW, I always delight in seeing them.

Bees!
Picked up my first nuc from Woods Bee Co. tonight and got them installed in the hive. I was too nervous to do much queen hunting, but there was a ton of brood. I'll check back in this weekend to see how they're doing and if it's time to add another box.

It's been a busy construction week on the farm. Trenches were dug, conduit laid, and the electric company gave it their blessing. The cement pad was poured and framing has started for the pump house and future farm stand.
Once we have power and water on site, house construction can begin.
