23 survivors.
Out of 89 chicks, we lost 44 to Marek’s disease.
22 were butchered. These 23 made it.

At 6.5 months, losses finally stabilized…
and they started laying.

These eggs aren’t just breakfast.
They’re proof of survival, answered prayers,
and a future God didn’t let die.

What is Marek’s disease?
It’s a highly contagious viral disease in chickens that attacks the nerves and immune system. It often shows up after weeks or months, which is why losses feel endless. Birds that survive to laying age often live normal, productive lives.

If you raise chickens — you need to know this.

This Mareks journey is hard. It’s hard culling sick birds. It’s hard deciding when.

It’s harder harvesting the heathy roosters.

We took in 13 big beautiful, healthy boys today to be processed. At 6.5 months old they were considered “survivors”.

This group was my Langshan and Olive Eggers. These were my dream boys; if I was able to continue my breeding plan.

But I only have 23 surviving hens. I would need 130 minimum to keep them all. Or I’d need to find them homes.

But I can’t just find them homes. I can’t sell or give birds away because we have Mareks.

Today was hard. To hold them on the way to the truck and know it was reality was a sick feeling. I cried the whole way home.

I’ll miss you big boys. Thank you for our time together ❤️

Sad days at CluckyLady Poultry.

I started CluckyLady Poultry with a big and colorful dream. To provide colored layers to my local area and the Pacific Northwest with drama free purchases and lifetime support - something I was struggling to find locally.

This year the CLP Flock took a huge hit. A set back that I felt was stealing my dreams. My flock is positive for Mareks.

Just typing those words is painful. I’ve prayed countless hours and God tells me somehow, someway, this isn’t the end; it’s just not the path I had chosen.

So for now my focus will change to caring for a Mareks positive flock. I have so much learning to do and I hope that leads to teaching.

Best wishes, warmest regards 🥰

I see so many posts asking how to keep predators out of eating range. I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. Get yourself a Livestock Guatdian Dog.

We recently switched to Big D feed. The difference is ….. wow! Locally produced, fresh feed — Big D Ranch is a family-owned mill located in Meridian, Idaho, and they make their feed “fresh, premium animal feed … all of our feed is made fresh directly on our family farm.” • Whole-grain / less processed / higher quality inputs — Because they control the milling and sourcing, Big D can use higher quality grains, minimize filler, and optimize the nutrient mix rather than relying on generic bulk crumbles. • Better feed density and less waste — Compared to crumbles, structured feed (e.g. pellets or coarser mix) tends to hold together better, reducing dust and waste when animals scratch through the feed. (Crumble is just cracked or broken-down pellets, so it’s more prone to breakage and losses.) • Control over nutrition & customization — Big D can adjust formulations (protein, vitamins, minerals) and produce mixes (layer, grower, etc.) exactly suited to your livestock, rather than using a “one size fits all” crumble blend.
