Crescent Moon Livestock

Crescent Moon Livestock Hi, I’m a young female livestock farmer raising sheep for meat and fiber, and grazing a few cattle.

I got my start showing sheep in 4-H and have loved livestock ever since. My small operation is growing as I work toward my dream of farming full time.

While I’ve been sharing plenty of stories about my naughty ram lamb lately, today’s Throwback Thursday is dedicated to Agatha. She was a registered natural colored Romney with a big personality and plenty of sass. Whether she was perched on a gate or climbing hay bales, she always kept things interesting around the farm.

Agatha may no longer be with us, but she’s definitely one of those sheep you never forget. ❤️

Tot isn’t the only one shedding and looking funny anymore! Tate has shed almost all the hair off her neck, and Teeter has random chunks missing all over. There’s hair floating across the pasture like tumbleweeds right now.

It’s only year two of owning Katahdins, so I’m still getting used to the shedding season—and I’m still amazed at just how much hair these sheep can lose!

I used to think my dogs shed a lot. The Katahdins took that as a personal challenge. 😂

Apparently this afternoon’s farm activity was “Escape Like Houdini.”

It wasn’t just Tank who decided his paddock was optional today—Donna, Lu, and the Jersey joined the jailbreak too. At least Tank has the decency not to walk over the electronet and release the rest of the sheep. Donna, on the other hand, has a well-documented history of escalating situations.

I managed to get her back where she belonged before she could create any additional chaos, but not before the rain started. What am I going to do with these animals? I’m beginning to think they’re all secretly competing for the title of Most Creative Escape Artist.

At least we’re getting some steady rain.

Lately, my Katahdins have been keeping me on my toes… especially Tank. This morning was yet another round of “catch the escape artist” and I still have no clue how he got out — the electronet was hooked up and everything looked fine. What am I going to do with this ram lamb? 🤦‍♀️🐑

And of course, I didn’t take any pictures until after I got him back in… when he suddenly looked cute, innocent, and completely unbothered. 😂

Tot is officially in her “half winter coat, half summer glow-up” era 😄
Katahdins are a hair sheep breed, so instead of needing shearing, they naturally shed their winter coats when the weather warms up. Tot’s still mid-shed, but I bet she’s already feeling a whole lot cooler out there in the heat. Here’s hoping the rest comes off soon!

Morning chore distractions are the best kind. Before the heat settles in, the lambs race, leap, and bounce all over the pasture like they’ve got springs in their feet. By afternoon, the warmer days slow them down — so I guess I’ll only be getting sidetracked by lamb shenanigans in the mornings from here on out. 🌞🐑

This morning I watched the sheep relaxing while the rain finally moved out. We got 1¼ inches here in Orwell, and there was water pooling throughout their paddock from all the rain. By tonight, the steers were out play fighting and carrying on, which turned out to be a pretty good way to end the work week and head into the weekend. I never get tired of watching these animals and all their different personalities.

Since the sheep are out on pasture, my mornings have shifted from the barn to the fields again. This morning was a chilly one — the grass was soaked in dew, and the flock seemed mildly unimpressed by the cold, wet breakfast. Still, they happily grazed and settled in to chew their cud while the sun slowly rose over the pasture. There’s something peaceful about photographing sheep at 6 a.m. in that soft early morning light.

Yesterday was one of those “finally feels like spring” kind of farm days. The sheep are officially out of the barn and back on pasture!

I forgot how frustrating unrolling electronet can be, but I got the three paddocks set up and ready to go. Once everything was in place, I moved the sheep out. The ewes were so excited to be outside again that they kept stopping every few feet to snack on fresh grass.

The lambs, on the other hand, were a little less convinced. They were pretty hesitant to go from the barn to the pasture, but after a lot of coaxing, I finally got them settled into their paddock.

And then there was Dude. The second the ewes were settled into their paddock, I spotted him sprinting from the barn toward the pasture. Somehow he launched himself clean over the side of his pen *without* knocking over the trash cans full of grain. Once I grabbed a little grain, though, getting him into his paddock was the easy part.

Safe to say everyone is happy to have green grass under their feet again — and I could probably spend all day just watching lambs bounce around the pasture. 🌱🐑
