To my eating egg customers:

I unfortunately had to throw a whole stack of egg cartons away that were returned this week with egg residue, food residue, and bits of shells. I cannot reuse egg cartons that are returned to me in this condition, so please dispose of them.

I understand that sometimes eggs can be messy, but if every one you give back is covered in egg and food, just keep them instead. I do try to keep my costs low where I can, but each egg carton cost $.65 plus the cost of any necessary stickers and stamps. This does affect the overall price I charge for an eating dozen of eggs. While this is considered the cost of doing business, the overarching message here is that I don’t want dirty egg cartons back, you can toss them.

Thank you for your understanding!

My russet eggers started out the spring strong with some really nice dark eggs, but have faded out as it’s gotten warmer. Now they’re giving me really cool ombré eggs.

Update on the hatch I had last week that are from my flock. These will be ones that I will use in my breeding pens next year.

I’m terrible at boiling eggs to get them exactly where they need to be, but I do love a good soft boiled egg. I will have to give this timing chart a try.

Did you know that May is National Egg Month?

Question of the day - which way should an egg be boiled in your opinion? And don't come here with any of that "boiled until the yolk starts turning green" crap! ;)

These 3 are from my Opal Legbar hatch last week…I think I hatched my very first sport! I’ve bred and hatched Opal and Cream Legbars for a few years now, and have never gotten a yellow baby so that was new. Her wings are coming in white. It’s hard to see in the pictures but there is a hint of a chipmunk stripe that’s yellower than the other fuzz. I’m going to keep my eye on her, but I’m thinking there must be recessive white in the line.

For anyone that works with Sport White/Frost Legbars, is this how the chicks look?

If she turns out to be white, would you remove her from the breeding project, or use her? And if so, would she be a better match with the creams or the opals?

This is one of the new bantam chicks I hatched from Cackleberry Farm, and it is the fluffiest, chonkiest baby ever! Its fluff is double the fluff of the other fluffers! I have no idea how it’s going to feather out, but I’m so intrigued.

This was a tough week for me on the farm, so I haven’t been as active as I usually am. Earlier in the week, I lost my very first rooster, Christian Grey. I knew that his health had not been the best, and I was trying to keep him calm and comfortable the past few weeks. It looked like he went to sleep that night and passed peacefully during the night. My girls and I gave him a burial near the house, and put flowers out for him.

A few days after that, I lost my very first Welsummer rooster, Kellogg. It was a freak accident, and not something I could have foreseen so this one was pretty hard. He also got a burial near the house.

I had placed a couple of Christian Grey and Alice’s eggs in the incubator a few weeks ago, and they hatched this weekend, a boy and a girl. I also had a few of Kellogg’s final eggs that I decided to put in the incubator this week.

It’s just a reminder that farming is not for the weary, and all lives eventually come to an end. 😢

This video from a great local hatchery explains perfectly what biosecurity is, and how important it is to have a plan in place. This is why if you come pick up birds or eggs from me, I will meet you at my gate.
