Omg. This is crazy 😂 My own ARMY of ducklings 😅😂

Silver Appleyards are a challenging breed to work with due to their high cull rate. We sourced our stock from Triple Creek Farm, and Heather has done an exceptional job improving the type and weight of these birds to where they should be! However, hoods (brown heads) remain an ongoing challenge within the breed.

Out of the 30 ducklings I currently have on the ground, I’ll be fortunate if a few mature without developing hoods. Working with these guys is truly a labor of love. I only take on breeds that I am genuinely passionate about, and I am committed to improving our breeding flock with each generation! 💙🦆

One day, I’ll get to experience this myself! I melt every time someone puts our eggs under a broody mama and has a successful hatch 🥹🥰🐣

Something new on the farm! I told myself (and my sons) NO MORE! but a nice young lady brought a half dozen very special eggs all the way from Georgia so I couldn't say no to that. Four of the six eggs hatched. The little broody hen (she is a Cochin bantam and an excellent little mama)) didn't want to give up on the last two eggs but eventually I had to make the decision for her. She is now happily attending to her little ones. I have wanted French Black Copper Marans for years and at one point bought hatching eggs and a few pullets. I paid a big price but unknowingly bought from a dishonest person and ended up disappointed. These little beauties are the real deal! Do you see that unhatched egg under little mama? That's what I will get from these little cuties when they start laying. Fingers crossed that I don't get four roosters!

About a month ago, we selected a tester and shipped 14 Silver Appleyard duck eggs all the way from Georgia to New Hampshire. Of those 14 eggs, 12 developed, and I just received the final report today, 9 have successfully hatched!

We’ve received so many wonderful compliments about our packaging, and having confirmation that it performed exceptionally well for duck eggs too makes me incredibly happy! Hatching eggs are always a gamble, but seeing outcomes like this makes all the care and effort that goes into packaging and shipping well worth it! 🥰🐣🦆

I’d like to take a moment to make an appreciation post for Michelle Parsley of Mountain Heritage Farm, who has been such a huge help as I’ve begun my milking journey with Lady Linda 🥛💕

Fun fact: Michelle owns Linda’s full sister, Lady Luna!

Thank you, Michelle, for answering my many, many questions, sharing your knowledge, and always being willing to help! Having someone with your experience in my corner has made this learning process soooo much easier. I truly appreciate all the guidance you’ve given me since I brought my girl home 🥰

Now, some appreciation for Lady Linda, who has shown unbelievable patience with me as we both learn this new process 🥹 Honestly, I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to milk her during this lactation, considering how long her bull calf was on her. I didn’t know if she would be willing to let down for me. Well… this morning she gave me her best yet, over half a gallon of milk!

As we settle into our groove and both get more comfortable with the routine, I expect her production to be around a gallon a day. So, it looks like it’s time for me to start searching for cheese recipes! 😆

I’m so proud of this girl and excited to see where this journey takes us!
