We’ve been getting SO many inquiries about our American Buff geese lately, and we absolutely love seeing how excited you all are about these incredible birds!! 🥰🪿

Our goose breeding season here in Georgia has ended for the year, so we won’t have goslings or hatching eggs available until around February/March 2027, when their breeding season begins again.

If you’ve been following us for a while, you know how deeply we care about our American Buffs and how passionate we are about this heritage breed ❤️ While we’re still a little ways away from having availability, I wanted to start sharing some important information about their temperament, care, and the commitment that comes with owning geese to help those of you interested in adding them to your farm or homestead prepare.

If you’re considering adding geese to your farm, be sure to take a few minutes to read through this!👇🏻

Temperament, Care & Commitment

American Buff geese are known for their docile, gentle, and naturally friendly temperament, but we have found that they can become especially affectionate when you spend a lot of time interacting with them. Geese are incredibly intelligent and social animals, and the bond they develop with their people can be truly special.

We spent a great deal of time with our flock from the time they were goslings, and that interaction has made such a difference. Our geese will literally soar across the pasture to excitedly greet us when we call them, and they have become some of the most affectionate animals here on the farm. One of the ways our geese show affection is through their little “love nibbles.” Fair warning, though, geese are chewy! They will happily investigate anything they can reach, so their living area should always be thoroughly goose-proofed. Trailer wires, tarps, cords, and other tempting objects can quickly become their favorite things to chew on.

American Buffs are a medium-weight breed and are also considered one of the quieter goose breeds, although the ganders tend to be more vocal. They are also a hardy, resilient breed with good natural disease resistance, making them well suited to life on pasture and a variety of climates when provided with proper care. We personally love the little conversations and chatter from our flock! There is something so endearing about hearing them communicate with one another throughout the day.

Geese are grazers and excellent foragers, and pasture is an extremely important part of their care. The majority of their natural diet consists of grasses and other vegetation, making them wonderfully suited to a pasture-based lifestyle. Geese should never be kept permanently confined to a coop or dry lot. They need room to graze, forage, explore, and behave like geese. A secure coop is important for bringing them in at night for protection from predators, but they should have access to pasture during the day.

And one of the most important things to understand before bringing geese home is that they are a long-term commitment. Geese can live for decades, with American Buff geese potentially reaching around 30 years of age with proper care. They aren’t seasonal decorations or short-term livestock, they can become lifelong companions.

Our geese are truly beloved pets, and if we were ever forced to choose just one variety of poultry to continue raising here on our farm, our American Buffs would be it. They are gentle, intelligent, affectionate, entertaining, and have brought us an incredible amount of happiness!

If you are considering adding geese to your farm, we strongly encourage you to do your research first and make sure you are prepared for the commitment that comes with these amazing animals. They are relatively easy to care for when their basic needs are properly met, and they can be an absolute pleasure to own, but they deserve a home that understands and appreciates what they need to thrive.

We care deeply about where our American Buff offspring go. Our goal is to help preserve this heritage breed by placing our birds with people who have taken the time to learn about geese and are genuinely prepared to care for them for the long term. We never want to see our Buffs resold simply because someone purchased them without fully understanding the commitment involved.

They are worth the commitment, and we truly believe that once you experience life with a flock of Buffs, you’ll understand why we love them so much ❤️
