Listen, at least we have alternatives!

Hear me out 🙃 Many fertilizers that you can buy are made from urea which is a compound that naturally occurs in urine. Now, I know this may not be for everyone. But it DOES work.

When we moved to first homesteading property in 2021 & needed to fill some of our container garden beds, it became quickly obvious that the compost we bought was low in nitrogen. The plants were turning yellow super fast after planting, & everything was dying. I saw a David the Good video on using diluted urine as a liquid fertilizer, and I was desperate to fix the problem without spending a lot of money on garden amendments. Almost immediately I saw a difference in the health of my plants, so years later, I still use it!

1. It has to be diluted to not burn the plants. I use 24-32 oz urine & fill the rest of a 2 gallon watering can with water, and I've never had an issue.

2. Use this on the base of plants or on the leaves of plants that aren't fruiting yet. You don't really want to get any type of fetilizer on your actual veggies, and this is no different.

3. Pease don't come for me in the comments. 😅

HERBS 🌿

Herbs have been used for food, medicine, perfume and more for over 50,000 years. This is the first year that we are dedicated to incorporating more of them into our diets and our lifestyle.

Modern medicine has proven time and time again that we can’t rely on THEM for authentic, holistic ingredients so taking it into our own hands is the only option.

Follow along to see what herbs we take on! 💚

Tonight’s moon isn’t just bright—it’s a Supermoon. October’s Full Harvest Moon rises as the first in a series of supermoons, shining closer to the fall equinox than September’s ever did. That’s why September gave us the Full Corn Moon, but October gets the honor of the Harvest Moon. Step outside, look up, and let this rare lunar glow kick off autumn’s magic. 🌕✨ Learn more: https://www.farmersalmanac.com/full-moon-dates-and-times

“You say tomato, I say tomatto. Same same.”

I’m not sure about yall, but we DEVOUR chips and salsa when we eat at any Mexican restaurant so we just decided to make the same style at home. It smelt SO good, that we threw a jar in the fridge when it was done for our late night snack. Half the jar, gone. Spaghetti sauce, next!

Grab your balls, IT’S CANNING SEASON 🫙

I will say, if this summer was good for anything, it was definitely the beans!! I love how many beans one plant can produce and how versatile they can be when prepping dishes! Green beans are rich in fiber and calcium, boosts gut function and can help with diabetes control of sugar levels. If you aren’t planning on planting these in the spring, I would definitely reconsider! 🌱

As I make the new page, I can’t help but flash back a couple years to one of our very first markets!! 🍂🍃

After producing 40+ watermelon/pumpkin one year, a friend of my father’s had made a suggestion to KaShawn to turn the fruit into jelly… never have had made it before, we whipped it up one afternoon and made GOLD!! Well, fast forward to after making the product, we weren’t sure what to do with it!! So we had just blindly signed up to go sell at a market down the road, hoping to not embarrass ourselves as first time vendors. Feeling froggy, we even hopped on a pie competition (knowing neither one of us had a baking bone in our body) and it ended got auctioned off for donation!! I’m not sure what we were thinking that weekend, but God works in mysterious ways. That market ended up sparking up our business, our love for self-efficiency and our sense of community that we can’t wait to bring home to Fluvanna. 💚

"If you are buying these things that you could make on your own, by definition, you are NOT a true homesteader."

"A home steader would only buy, yeast, salt, sugar, coffee, tea. Everything else you grow or produce"

Well well well. I guess I'll need to go tell my animals and garden that I'm not a "true" homesteader because I don't can my own soup or make my own jelly. And let's ignore the home canned food on my pantry shelf simply because it also exists next to store bought food.

That's ridiculous.

There is NOT one thing that disqualifies you from being a homesteader/farmer if you are in fact raising animals, growing a garden, trying to produce instead of only consume, etc. You can sip your diet coke, have cans of soup stockpiled for power outages, buy store bought bread, eat fast food from time to time, (insert any other normal thing here)...let's stop gatekeeping this lifestyle and making it tribalistic. It's not one size fits all. 🩷
