Have not updated in awhile. Working on fascia and soffit which is very slow and tedious, using Azek PVC trim for the fascia and Hardie concrete board for the soffit. Practically indestructible materials that will be low maintenance. Tinka has no fear of heights, she frequently climbs out an upstairs window onto the roof to be near where I am working.

Past week we finished getting the septic system installed, passed inspection and buried it before it rained. Kids have been enjoying the weather and the bees are bringing in a wide verity of pollen.

Started on the septic drain field this past week. The dry and mild weather has made for good digging and working conditions. The 90’ long trenches have to be level and a set distance below the surface which made it a challenge on a hillside.

We harvested honey this week, the rainy summer definitely put a dent in production but still yielded about 35 gallons from 13 hives. Trying out some new equipment, a 12 frame Hillco electric spinner greatly sped up processing and tested a Man Lake EZ Fill bottler I bought used. Once the frames are extracted, they go outside and the bees will lick them clean before they are placed into storage. After processing honey we treated for mites, fed hives that are lightweight and installed a new queen into a queenless hive. Aside from bee chores, found a nice Jotul F500 woodstove. These are rare to find used, me and Reuben dropped what we were doing and made the 3 hour trip to eastern Kentucky to purchase it. Busy week of hard work doing what I love with those I love is the perhaps the greatest gift anyone could ever ask for.

Past week or so we have been finishing up sheeting the walls, installing windows, building and painting additional hive boxes and bought a tractor to help with farm chores. Plan to install the septic leach field next week and hope to pull supers and start processing honey after that!

Finished the gable dormer this week and have most of the west gable wall sheeted. Thankful for my cousin, Joel White, for letting me borrow his lift. It has been a life saver. Bees are confusing, had two hives swarm last week and found two queens in one hive. Pictured is an example of a desirable trait called varroa sensitive hygiene. The bees detect female mites feeding on pupating worker bees under the wax cappings and remove the capping and kill the mites. What’s interesting is that this trait is being selectively bred for commercially yet these are mostly local bees without selective breeding influence. Perhaps natural selection is catching up to the mite problem.

Busy and productive week. Finished sheeting the roof and framed most of the gable dormer. The rafters for the gable dormer involved compound miters to merge the two different pitched roofs and were really challenging for me, the math did not make sense. I practiced on scraps and took me over a day to get it figured out. Tinka our red heeler who can climb ladders and walk across floor joist also decided to join as at the ridge while working. I am wrapping up queen rearing, seems to be late in the season, last batch only had about half return from mating flights. Plan to harvest honey when the forecasted cold front hopefully arrives late next week.

The roof has been a marathon but the end is in sight. With help from my brothers and nephews, we managed to get 2/3 of the roof sheeted fairly quickly between rain showers.

Gang signs? Basically! Inside the hive, the queen primarily uses pheromones to communicate her viability and presence, outside the hive she primarily uses visual aids to navigate. These mating boxes contains three separate colonies and placing unique markers above each entrance helps ensure she returns to her proper home after her mating flights.

Another busy and productive week! The bees will be starting winter preparation in August and now is the time to treat for mites, feed as needed and replace lackluster queens. Getting them strong and healthy is important because in August the queens will be changing the genetics of the eggs she lays. These eggs will produce winter bees that will live over 6 months as opposed to the normal 6-7 weeks. Ensuring the health of these long lived bees is the best way to get them through the winter.

House progress is slow but steady. The roof has been the hardest part of this entire project. Spent this week installing the remaining rafters and building the “fly rafters” that overhang the house by 16”. It has required hours of climbing and balancing.
