Hi everyone! A quick update for Wednesday, October 7: the apple orchard trip is canceled. The apples are almost done for the season, and the orchard didnā€™t think there would be enough for the kids to enjoy.

But weā€™re still getting together at the Salisbury Zoo! Please meet us at the front of the zoo at 10:00 a.m. Weā€™ll walk through and learn about the animals first, then the kids can enjoy the playground. Please bring a packed lunch.

Refunds for the orchard trip will be issued. We canā€™t wait to check out our fun, free zoo with you! Hope to see you Wednesday!

When I became the field trip coordinator for Wicomico County, Iā€™ll admit I was a little overwhelmed trying to figure out where we could go all year. Turns out, there are more amazing places nearby than I ever realizedā€”and Iā€™m so glad Whitehaven made the list!

We learned so much fascinating local history. The ferry has been carrying people across the Wicomico River since at least 1688ā€”more than 80 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed! The schoolhouse opened in 1886, and the church was built in 1892. The hotel has quite a story, too: it was a private residence beginning in 1803, became a hotel in 1886, later returned to use as a private home, and reopened as a hotel in 2001.

Thank you so much to the Whitehaven Heritage Association, Inc. and the Whitehaven Hotel for welcoming us and helping educate our homeschool students. From ringing the bell and sitting at the old desks to learning about the ferry and peeking inside a historic bed-and-breakfast, this trip was definitely one for the record books! ā¤ļø

Adventure awaits in Whitehaven tomorrow! šŸŒžšŸŒŠ

Weā€™ll meet at 10:00 AM on River Street, where weā€™ll park before setting off to explore. Parking is limited in this small town, and the streets are narrow, so please park in the designated area rather than along the street.

The forecast is calling for some sunshine, but it may feel breezy and chilly by the water. Dress in layers, and make sure your littles wear tennis shoesā€”weā€™ll be doing lots of walking!

Jan will be our guide for the tour. Sheā€™s generously leading it free of charge and accepting donations for the Whitehaven Historical Society. Iā€™ll collect donations ahead of time. If youā€™re able to give, every bit helpsā€”even $5 from 20 families would add up to $100!

Thanks so much for joining our field trips. We canā€™t wait to explore Whitehaven with you and your littles tomorrow! šŸ§­

The weather is really not on our side! The cold has killed the flowers, and now the rain and coastal flooding are affecting our plans for the Whitehaven tour. šŸ˜‚

Hereā€™s the updated plan:

šŸŒø Our Little Lane Flowers field trip scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, has been canceled by the venue due to circumstances beyond our control. Refunds will be offered to everyone who registered.

ā›“ļø Our Whitehaven walking tour has been postponed until Wednesday, September 30 due to the coastal flooding and poor weather conditions.

Because weā€™ve had so many people interested in the Whitehaven trip, weā€™ll need to divide everyone into smaller groups so the town can accommodate us. Iā€™ll post a new sign-up, so please be sure to register again if you plan to attend!

Please update your calendars, and letā€™s hope Mother Nature cooperates next week! šŸ¤ž

Also, Friday is Homeschool Day at JZ Farms! Our family plans to go, and I know a few other families are planning to attend too. Weā€™d love to see you there! ā¤ļø

Apparently, our three emusā€”who were raised together and have been best friends for all 18 months of their livesā€”are now sworn enemies. šŸ™ƒ (breeding season is among us)

They wonā€™t eat together. They wonā€™t lie together. The only activity they currently enjoy as a group is trying to rip one anotherā€™s throats out. šŸ˜‚

During all this emu catfighting, theyā€™ve been pulling out feathers everywhere. Emu feathers are absolutely beautiful and actually double-shafted, meaning each one looks like two feathers growing together! šŸŖ¶

Savannah and I are going to collect the loose feathers today. If youā€™d like some for a craft, please let us know! We have plenty, courtesy of Emu Fight Club. šŸ¤£

As many of yā€™all know, we have three very active kidsā€”and luckily, only two out of three are currently in their busy seasons. šŸ˜‚

Savannah is cheering, and Ryder is starting parade season with the Mardela marching band. The band is heading to Disney this year to compete, so weā€™re doing our part to help raise the funds to get them there!

Today started with Ryderā€™s parade in Sharptown at 10, followed by Savannah cheering at a game by noon, all the way in Felton. Then we came home for what was supposed to be a quick 45-minute breather before heading to BingoMania for the band fundraiser at 4:30.

Wellā€¦that little ā€œbreakā€ turned into emergency medical care for one of our emus. Theyā€™re all coming into maturity, itā€™s breeding season, and apparently chaos was also on todayā€™s schedule. So I hopped on an emu, bandaged her up, changed clothes, and came to sell poppers to the masses at bingo. šŸ¤£

But donā€™t worryā€”Carson still keeps us on our toes too. He had both snakes out getting some sunshine today. šŸ˜¬šŸ

Just another perfectly normal Saturday at the Durbin house. Parade mom, cheer coach, emu medic, snake supervisor, and bingo workerā€”all before dinner. šŸ˜‚
