Not all plants are safe for horses! Some common weeds, trees, and flowers can cause serious health problems. Keep your pastures and hay safe, and always watch for unfamiliar plants.
How to protect horses and keep hay safe:
✅Inspect hay before feeding. Look for unfamiliar weeds, leaves, seeds, and other plant material. Do not feed hay suspected of containing poisonous plants.
✅Check pastures regularly. Identify and safely remove toxic weeds, and prevent access to hazardous trees and discarded garden clippings.
✅Maintain adequate forage. Horses with limited access to good-quality forage may eat unfamiliar plants they would otherwise avoid.
✅Identify plants before removal. Some dangerous plants resemble harmless forage species, so consult an extension specialist or veterinarian if uncertain.
