It is with heavy hearts that we share this news with you all.
Unfortunately, our storefront is now permanently closed.
When we signed our lease, we leased space under Power Fit Eats Texas. Both Power Fit Eats and ourselves were under the impression that the permits, inspections, and approvals that had been in place for years were what was required for operation.
The shared kitchen we worked from had been routinely inspected by various departments, and the property had been reinspected shortly after we moved in.
As many of you know, our building housed a shared commercial kitchen where businesses regularly came and went.
Following inspections involving another tenant, multiple departments reviewed various aspects of the property. During those inspections, several issues were identified that required attention from the property owner and management. Some were relatively minor, while others involved permits and building compliance matters that predated our tenancy.
We immediately worked with Code Enforcement and completed every application and document requested of us. Initially, we were told we could continue operating while permits were being processed. However, shortly afterward, we were instructed to close while the situation was reviewed.
A few days later, we underwent another inspection and passed with only a few minor corrections required on our end. We addressed those items immediately and continued working with the city to find a path forward.
We were later informed that while our retail space could potentially operate, we would not be permitted to use the shared kitchen where our baking equipment was located until additional property-related issues were resolved.
We explored several possible solutions and waited for further guidance, but unfortunately those approvals never materialized.
This week, we were notified that our permits would not be moving forward because the future of the building itself remains uncertain and the property-related issues have not been resolved. As a result, we have no choice but to permanently close our storefront location.
This has been incredibly heartbreaking for us.
As a small business, we invested everything we had into this opportunity. Like many small business owners, we took a leap of faith, worked countless hours, and poured our hearts into creating something special for our community. To see it come to an end under circumstances largely outside of our control has been devastating.
We want to thank Kayla and the team at Power Fit Eats for the support they have shown us throughout this process. They have worked with us every step of the way and have been as helpful as possible during an extremely difficult situation.
We also want to thank every single one of you.
Thank you for supporting a small-town bakery. Thank you for sharing our posts, placing orders, stopping by our window, recommending us to friends, and believing in us. Every cookie, cupcake, cake, and pretzel you purchased helped make this dream possible.
While our storefront chapter is ending, Sweet June's is not.
We will be transitioning back to operating full-time as a Texas Cottage Bakery from our home kitchen. We will continue offering custom orders, holiday treats, weekly specials, and all the sweet things you've come to know and love.
Many of you have asked what's next. One opportunity that recently became available is the former Cookie Jar location. The space, equipment, and lease takeover would require just under $10,000 to get started. While we would absolutely love the chance to continue serving our community from a storefront, we simply do not have those funds available right now after everything that has happened.
For now, our focus is rebuilding, serving our customers, and continuing to grow one order at a time from home. Maybe one day we'll find ourselves back in a storefront again. We certainly haven't given up on that dream.
This is not the outcome we hoped for, and we certainly feel disappointed. ☹️ But we are choosing to view this not as the end of our story, but as the beginning of a new chapter.
Thank you for standing by us through the highs and the lows.
We couldn't do this without you, and we're not going anywhere.
With love,
Sweet June's Bake Shoppe 💔
