Ouch! This poor horse got bitten multiple times by a rattlesnake in the leg this week. Dr. Ari was able to respond immediately and ended up giving 2 doses of Antivenin to rapidly start reversing the effect of the venom and get her on the road to recovery.

🐴 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐫. 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐲:

“𝙈𝙮 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙨 𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙄 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙖. 𝙒𝙝𝙮?”

This is a fairly common question and the answer is not always simple.

The sacroiliac (SI) region connects the horse’s pelvis to the spine and plays an important role in transferring power from the hind limbs through the body. When this area is painful or repeatedly becomes sore, there can be several possible causes.

🔎 Some common possibilities include:

• 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐜 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧 – Inflammation or injury directly involving the SI region can cause persistent discomfort.

• 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐝-𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 – Pain in the hock, stifle, foot, or other areas of the hind limb can cause a horse to compensate, placing additional stress on the pelvis and back.

• 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 – Poor conditioning, overuse, or muscle imbalance can place additional stress on the structures surrounding the pelvis.

• 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬 – The way a horse is built and moves can influence how forces are distributed through the hind end.

• 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 – Changes in workload, intense exercise, repetitive movements, or inadequate recovery can contribute to persistent soreness.

💡 One important point: A horse that is sore over the SI region does not necessarily have a primary SI problem.

Because horses compensate extremely well, the original source of pain may actually be somewhere else. This is why a thorough lameness and musculoskeletal examination is so important when soreness continues.

🩺 As a vet, what do we look at?

A proper evaluation includes observing the horse at rest and in motion, palpating and assessing the neck, back, and limbs. Then, using appropriate imaging (eg x-rays and ultrasound, including sometimes transrectal) and possibly nerve blocking to further identify the source of pain.

The goal isn't simply to treat where the horse is sore. It's to determine WHY the horse is sore in the first place.

If your horse has recurring back or SI soreness, don't assume it's just a “tight back” or something they have to live with. A good evaluation can help identify the underlying problem and develop an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Cooler weather is coming… and along with this we tend to see an increase in colic cases.

As temperatures drop, decreases in water intake, changes in feed type or intake, and changes in activity or routine can increase the risk of colic. A few simple habits can help keep your horse’s gut happy:

💧 Encourage plenty of water intake (clean water troughs, daily watery mashes, adding daily salt)
🌾 Keep forage consistent if possible and make feed changes gradually
🏃‍♀️ Maintain regular movement and turnout
👀 Know your horse’s normal eating, drinking, manure, and behavior

Every horse owner should have a basic colic plan: Banamine paste on hand, a thermometer, stethoscope, your regular veterinarian’s number and a backup vet's number, and a way to safely transport your horse if needed.

Know the signs: not eating normally, pawing, rolling, looking at the flank, streching out, repeated lying down/getting up, sweating, lack of manure.

When in doubt, call your veterinarian early, we are happy to help and early is better than late!

These little freeloaders didn’t pay rent and weren't invited.

Bot fly larvae may look like something out of a sci-fi movie, but they are one of the things we can find while scoping your horse's stomach. While a small number may not cause obvious problems, a heavy bot burden should be addressed.

🪰 The best defense?
✔️ Remove bot eggs from your horse’s coat regularly.
✔️ Talk with your veterinarian about the best timing of deworming for bot control and other parasites in your area.

Because the only thing that belongs in your horse’s stomach is hay… not hitchhiking larvae, and not ulcers.
