A little update from Metzbean Coffee Lab!

When we first shared that we’d be experimenting with Swiss Water Process decaf for an upcoming roasting competition, we knew it would be a challenge—but it turned out to be an incredible learning experience.

The competition required us to create a half-caf using the regular and decaf versions of the same microlot. Finding the right balance wasn’t easy, and this particular coffee needed plenty of rest before it truly opened up.

We’re excited and grateful to have finished 16th out of 100 expert roasters, including many talented professionals. Receiving positive feedback from all five expert judges made the experience even more rewarding.

One of the best parts was tasting the regular and decaf coffees side by side. It gave us a whole new appreciation for decaf, the roasting process, and the patience it takes to bring out the best in every coffee.

Excited to share that metzbean will be experimenting with decaf coffee as part of an upcoming roasting competition. So here is some info on decaf! Particularly will be working with a Swiss water process decaf. They sponsored the competition and it is one of the leading chemical free methods.

Every drink can be made with varying ratios, but generally a flat white is similar to a latte with less milk. Highly recommend trying the flat white for its balance between espresso and a latte. Bold flavor that delivers, backed by creamy texture. A hack to getting something similar when it is not present on the menu is to order a 16oz latte with an extra shot if espresso. It usually ends up being two flat whites in one cup! Win win. 😋
