I’m raising funds for an educational pollinator mural at Growing Together community garden owned by Church of the Redeemer who opened up this land years ago for the community at large with 500 garden beds as a joyful, peaceful oasis of a green space here in South Philly. You don’t have to live here to understand the positive effects of a healthy green space in the city and any artistic touches to really add some color and beauty really go a long way. The mural will be designed and painted by .jones and will be a colorful celebration of nature and pollinators in Philadelphia. Please DONATE what you can - any little bit helps. Thank you.

For the past four years, I’ve kept honeybees at Growing Together Community Garden in Point Breeze, helping people connect with nature through beekeeping, pollinator habitat, education, and community events.

Now I’m raising $2,800 to bring a beautiful pollinator mural by Philadelphia artist .jones to the garden. The mural will transform the cargo container near the apiary into a vibrant celebration of bees, flowers, and the wildlife that thrives in our city.

This project is my way of giving back to a garden, church, and community that have welcomed me with open arms.

If you’ve ever enjoyed my honey, visited the apiary, learned about bees with me, or simply believe in supporting nature and community in Philadelphia, I’d be grateful for your support.

SEWER SWARM UPDATE 🐝 🕳️ 🐝
It’s been a while since I visited my home away from home, the sewer on Lambert Street in South Philly. I was letting the bees do their thing. After I added a frame of eggs into the trap box to lure the trapped out foragers, they had started building a new queen in the box. Meanwhile I can only presume the Sewer queen had all but halted her egg laying underground since no foragers were coming back with brood food. According to bee timing (based on bee development) the new queen must have hatched and mated by now and 🤞 should be laying eggs 🥚 in the box, thereby creating a new thriving colony. As you see, the box is bursting with honeybees that have all found a new home above ground. I’m planning to take a look inside tomorrow morning for eggs and praying 🙏 we have a laying queen. In fact, Thom, the neighbor who originally called in the swarm on April 15 🙈 is calling on the saints to assist with prayers for eggs. He sent me this message:

Saint Ambrose of Milan
The Legend: According to tradition, when Ambrose was an infant resting in his cradle, a swarm of bees landed on his face and left a drop of honey behind without stinging him. His father saw this as an omen, and Ambrose grew up to be a famously eloquent speaker and bishop, earning the nickname “the honey-tongued doctor.”

I love pizza and guess what? I’m having a pizza party at on Wednesday, June 24 from 5:30-7 pm. 🐝🍕
Bees & Pizza
Join me at the Rail Park on June 24 for a fun evening of urban beekeeping, local honey, and pollinator education. Learn how honey bees help keep Philadelphia blooming, hear stories from the hive, and get your bee questions answered.
Then we’ll celebrate with a pizza party featuring a special honey pizza made with Anna Bee’s Honey at (they’ll also be offering as their special all week).

📍 Rail Park (1300 Block of Noble St.)🕠 June 24 | 5:30–7:00 PM🎟️ Free
Come for the bees, stay for the pizza, and leave with a new appreciation for Philly’s hardest-working pollinators.

If you haven’t been to the Rail Park yet, it’s one of Philadelphia’s most unique public spaces - a former elevated rail line transformed into a vibrant urban park. Tucked between buildings and city streets, it offers unexpected skyline views, lush greenery, public art, and a perspective of the city you can’t get anywhere else. The current park is just the beginning of an ambitious vision to create a three-mile greenway connecting multiple Philadelphia neighborhoods along historic rail corridors.

Taught the Intro to Urban Beekeeping this past Saturday at my apiary to a large crowd. Weather started off a bit cool and too windy 💨 but subsided enough to dig into several hives and see a couple really unhealthy colonies 👎 and redeemed at the end by seeing a thriving colony and did some mite tests. One of the bad colonies didn’t even need a mite test - almost any bee we picked out of it had 2-3 mites on it. Not a good sign for the neighboring colonies. Also a couple colonies were seemingly queenless but it’s difficult during swarm season to really tell if there’s no queen or a virgin queen in the hive so we have to wait a week or two and hope for the best. Meanwhile the foragers are pulling their weight and packing in the nectar. I have lots of fresh honey to extract. My work is cut out for me for sure. 🐝
