BOURBON, RYE & SINGLE MALT SCOTCH TASTING WEDS NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 23, 2026 at 7:00 PM at Cannonball Storage, 1105 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia 19125

I am hosting an epic whisky tasty being led by my friend, Jared Card, who represents Tennessee producer J.W. Kelly & Co., and independent bottler Murray McDavid Whisky. This tasting will have something for everyone with 8 pours, evenly split between Scotch and American whiskeys. Here is what we shall be tasting:

JW Kelly Old Milford Bourbon - 94 proof (47% abv) - 6yr old
JW Kelly Single Barrel Bourbon - 109 proof (54.5% abv) - 8yr - 9yr old

So I tried three expressions of Jimmy Red Straight Bourbon. The Classic did not impress me. It was perfectly okay.
The Sherry finished expression was nice; not overly Sherry influenced, but the finishing casks added some layers of flavor and complexity that were absent from the Classic. That leaves the Bottled in Bond. This expression makes me appreciate why people who travel south love this label.

A deep amber color, lively legs and a rich nose of sour cherry and light syrup greet one pleasantly. The palate gets treated to a moderately oily mouthfeel
before sweet corn, cherries, mild oak tannin, cinnamon and light brown sugar jump on the taste buds. The finish is medium length and entirely pleasing even as it fades.

This is one damned good bourbon! At a price of $80, it rates as only a fair value, but it is worthy of a spot on one's shelf to be enjoyed with friends who like whiskeys that veer from being traditional or ordinary.

I was in NYC last week for a meet and greet tasting with legendary distiller and blender Billy Walker, who heads the resurgent GlenAllachie distillery. The whiskies poured were very nice, but having the opportunity to speak with Billy alone for some time about his thoughts on blending made the trip up even more worthwhile. I always ask master blenders for their thoughts on blending and re-racking barrels, and especially blending for consistency. Billy's most memorable comment to me was to the effect that blending for consistency is something that the big companies worry about with their mass produced expressions, especially in the US. He is more striving to get to near perfection on all of his small batches and individual barrels, getting the most flavor he can from every one so that they offer the best flavor experience to the consumer, even if that means the flavor profile varies at times. As someone who blends to and for taste regularly, hearing that philosophy was refreshing.

Kyro Distilling Company, Game of Thrones 100% Malted Rye "Whisky of Blood"

Made in Isokyro, Finland from 100% Finnish malted rye, matured in ex-bourbon and French oak casks for at least 3 years, and bottled at 46% ABV.

Color is a pale gold, with straw-like hints of mint green. A thin line of oils clings to the top of the glass. Slender legs develop slowly, in no hurry to rejoin the pool.

Nose is surprisingly understated, though earthy grain, cut grass and soft hints of honey and white spices are present.

The malted rye does not bring intense spice to the palate, but rather soft notes of white pepper, ginger, sage honey (mild sweetness, with an herbal finish) and green apple that rides a light to medium viscosity mouth feel to a long finish, with the spices lingering and joined by lemon zest.

This is an unusual whisky for me to review as Finnish ryes are very different from the North American rye whiskeys that have shaped my frame of reference over the years. The nose and pallet are reminiscent of young whisky, but not in a bad way. The spices, apple, and honey notes, expand as they are joined by the lemon zest into the finish. I can say I do like this offering from the interesting collection of Finns in the accompanying photos. It is definitely worthy of tasting. Because I sell it, I will leave it up to the reader to decide if it is worthy of purchasing. I encourage anyone in Southeastern Pennsylvania to come visit me at BOTLD, 190 Town Center Rd., King of Prussia, PA to try this and many other spirits, including whiskeys, rums, gins, vodkas, cordials, liquors, and ready to drink cocktails most Thursdays and Fridays between 11 AM and 7:00 PM and on most Saturdays between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

I will be tasting these three on Thursday at work. The Jimmy Red lineup has developed a nearly cult like following akin to some of the Buffalo Trace collections. I have tasted the Classic compliments of a former coworker who went golfing in South Carolina every year and always came back with a bottle or two.

By the way, I have set up and reopened the BOTLD Distillery Store at 190 Town Center Rd in King of Prussia, PA. You will find me there from 11 am to 7 pm on Thursdays and Fridays and 10 am to 7 pm on Saturdays. The store is open 9 am to 3 pm Mon to Weds as well. Come in to try a vast lineup of spirits spanning whiskeys, gins, rums, vodkas, cordials, liqueurs and cocktails.

This insanely oversized pour is intentional. No, not so much for the obvious bottle kill, but rather to honor my recently deceased friend and former office mate, Marc Lamer, Esquire. Marc had a notoriously heavy pouring hand and all who attended happy hour at my office learned of the "Lamer Pour." Cheers to you, Lamer! You were a good man with a great sense of humor and a passion for whisky you shared with me for 20 years. The world is a lesser place without you, old man. Sláinte!

The whisky is a beautifully sherried bottle from Blackadder that I believe was distilled at Arran, though I can't be sure. Dark honey, ripe summer fruits, and mild oak rise from the glass to one's nose and greet the palate as well. Lamer would have loved this dram as much as I do.

I did achieve these two bottle kills when hosting friends for a bottle share last Friday evening. One bourbon, one scotch and we even shared and emptied one beer, a Goose Island barrel aged bananas foster stout (not pictured).
I still have to empty more open bottles of whiskey so I can justify opening newer bottles. I guess that means another bottle share in the near future.

This very nice Scotch-like American Single Malt was my final birthday celebration pour last week. More of a rich honey vanilla than caramel despite maturation in new American oak, with a very gentle peat smoke note running through. A great whisky for people seeking a soft and easy dram and especially good for introducing American drinkers to peat smoke and scotch whisky in general. This one is available at retail and online at BOTLD for 58 🦌.

This light and easy Glenmorangie was birthday dram number two. A Midwinter Night's Dram is a marriage of ex-bourbon and Oloroso casks bottled at 43% ABV. I wanted a lighter whisky to enjoy with our fine sushi dinner. It delivered malty goodness with a fair amount of spice, complimenting the meal very nicely. The final pour was enjoyed after dinner back at home.
