In August 1982, hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow opened for The Clash on their Combat Rock U.S. tour. The crowd wasn’t having it at first—he was met with boos. But then Joe Strummer himself walked out on stage and set the record straight: Kurtis was there because The Clash wanted him there.
That moment wasn’t just about defending an opener—it was about tearing down walls between genres. Punk, hip-hop, ska, reggae, soul… they were all part of the same fight for expression and connection.
At The Phensic, we live in that same space—where sounds and scenes collide. Our mix of punk, ska, and soul comes from that tradition of refusing to stay in one lane.
Music is bigger when it’s shared.
