The unofficial but official drink of Juneteenth is the “Red Drink.” The red color honors the blood shed by enslaved people during the transatlantic slave trade, while also symbolizing resilience, strength, and joy.

The Red Drink has deep roots in West Africa, where pitchers of red beverages, once brewed from native reddish kola nuts or hibiscus tea, have long graced tables during celebrations and gatherings. Over time, the recipe evolved based on the ingredients available to enslaved Africans and their descendants in America. Throughout history, it has been crafted using everything from strawberries, red lemonade, and cherry soda to classic Kool-Aid to name a few.

Today, we honor the lives and legacy of those who came before us by using our bulk hibiscus tea leaves to brew our own Red Drink. Happy Juneteenth! We hope you take some time today to get involved and connect with your community at local events.

Our community is growing (again!).

With our May Member Drive officially wrapped up, we want to give a massive welcome to our newest members and a joyful welcome back to everyone who reactivated their memberships! Our community is stronger and more vibrant because of you.

We’re officially 15,360+ active member-households strong, banking 432 new members and 499 reactivations during the drive!

This Giving Tuesday, we are supporting Mitzvah Circle. Mitzvah Circle helps local families experiencing a real crisis - homelessness, serious illness, job losses, and more - so they can get back on their feet with dignity. Mitzvah Circle supplies diapers, toiletries, clothes, school supplies, bedsheets, coaching, and case management. Donations are an opportunity to make sure a family’s critical needs are met when there aren’t other ways to get help and remind real people they matter to their community, that someone is watching out for them in their hardest moments. Co-op members can volunteer with Mitzvah Circle and earn working member credit. Donations are tax deductible.

Don't forget about our Mural Celebration in Germantown this Friday, June 12th, from 4 to 6:30 PM!

Come celebrate the big debut of our “Weaving a Bountiful Harvest” mural on the side of our Germantown store! Commissioned by Mural Arts and designed by Eurhi Jones, the festivities will include a ribbon-cutting alongside remarks from stakeholders, local elected officials, and Eurhi Jones.

Bring the family for a DJ, art activities for kids, light refreshments, soft pretzels, and sweet treats!
