Can we talk? 💋 Food safety is a huge concern of mine.
Regardless of how delicious a recipe sounds or if it'd sell like hotcakes, I won't offer it if it violates Wisconsin Cottage Bakery laws.
Some things you may be surprised by...
We can't sell products with ingredients like meat (pepperoni/ham, etc.), veggies (zucchini, carrot, etc.), fruit (blueberries, cherries, strawberries, etc.*), foods that aren't baked such as rice krispie treats, fudge, etc.), items with traditional buttermilk frosting* or cream cheese*. There are a LOT more restrictions and as cottage (home) bakers, we are expected to know and follow these laws.
No banana breads or muffins, no zucchini muffins, cakes or cookies, no carrot cake, especially not with cream cheese frosting*
No pancake mixes or other mixes/seasonings. Cottage bakers are not permitted to "process" food.
No selling of your product by someone other than YOU. You can't bake it and drop it off for someone else to sell. This is considered wholesaling.
If you see someone selling something that violates state standards, ask if they have a huge insurance policy. They're going to need it when someone gets sick (or worse) on their product.
*While most of these items are not approved due to high moisture content and risk of spoiling, a baker can submit their recipe to the state for testing. Fruits that are dehydrated or freeze dried such as raisins, cranberries, cherries, raspberries, blueberries etc.are typically approved without testing. The state does have some approved recipes.
Please do not support these vendors. They put our hard earned right to bake and sell from our homes AND you at risk.
