In November 1971, accountant John Emil List killed five members of his family at their home in Westfield, New Jersey: his wife, Helen; his mother, Alma; and his three children, Patricia, John, and Frederick.

After the murders, List carefully concealed the crime. He stopped mail deliveries, informed schools that the family was leaving town, and left a letter explaining his actions before disappearing. Nearly a month passed before authorities discovered the victims on December 7, 1971.

Using the name Robert P. Clark, List built a new life, worked as an accountant, joined a church community, and remarried. He remained undetected for more than 17 years.

In 1989, the case was featured on the television program America’s Most Wanted. Forensic sculptor Frank Bender created an age-progressed bust showing how List might appear years later. After the broadcast aired, a viewer recognized the resemblance and alerted authorities.

On June 1, 1989, John List was arrested in Virginia. Fingerprint evidence confirmed his identity, ending nearly two decades as a fugitive.

In 1990, List was convicted of five counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to five consecutive life terms.

The case remains one of the most notable examples of forensic art assisting a criminal investigation, demonstrating how age progression and public awareness helped solve a long-unsolved manhunt.
