Had a little photo shoot on the farm today with this new mama.
Spiders aren't everyone's favorite, but they play an important role in our ecosystem. Here on the farm, we welcome their presence and share our beautiful home with them.
Here's some interesting facts about wolf spiders:
1. They don’t spin webs to catch prey – Wolf spiders are ground-dwelling hunters that actively chase and pounce on their prey.
2. Excellent eyesight – They have eight eyes arranged in three rows, giving them strong vision, especially at night.
3. They carry their egg sac – Female wolf spiders attach their egg sac to their spinnerets (on their abdomen) and carry it with them wherever they go.
4. They carry their babies, too, like this mama here – After hatching, the spiderlings climb onto their mother’s back and ride around with her for days or even weeks until they’re ready to be independent.
5. They are solitary and territorial – Except during mating or while caring for young, wolf spiders live and hunt alone.
6. They are natural pest control – They eat a wide range of insects, including pests like cockroaches, crickets, ants, beetles, and even other spiders.
7. No webs = no mess – Since they hunt instead of building webs, they help control bugs without leaving sticky webs around your home or garden.
8. Non-aggressive to humans – They generally avoid people and only bite if seriously threatened. Even then, their bites are rarely dangerous.
9. Support healthy ecosystems – By keeping insect populations in check, they help maintain balance in gardens, forests, and fields.
10. Safe for plants and pets – Unlike some chemical pest treatments, wolf spiders are eco-friendly and don’t harm your garden, pets, or soil health.
