WORK PARTY!!!
The water got high and made quite a mess of our fields, fences, plants, bridge, new driveway and creek bank. We will begin cleaning up in the next week or two. Any friends/family that would like to join in the fun, we promise bonfires at the end of the day, meals of buffalo, venison, wild mushrooms and 100% maple syrup.

Word of the day: Ethnopharmacology

It is interesting that many academics in the USA dismiss the study of herbs or alternative treatments as ‘quack’ medicine, or somehow lacking scientific research.

What we are studying (and teaching) at Brushy-Creek Farm is Ethnopharmacology.
Ethnopharmacology encompasses multi-disciplinary studies, including botany, biology, chemistry, anthropology, pharmacology, history, farming, and psychology. Ethnopharmacology integrates traditional knowledge with scientific disciplines to help develop new methods of treatment and is often the ‘bridge’ between traditional and allopathic medicines.

At Brushy-Creek Farm, we are specifically studying the science behind why certain plants in traditional medicine have had historic success across cultures, and across the globe. With specific focus on methods and preparations, the paring of certain herbs, sugars, citrus, or salts for maximum activation, as well as the chemistry of active ingredients, in an effort to maximize bioavailability (absorption into the body).

This is intense, on-going study that will last many lifetimes.

If you love to learn, if you love to share knowledge, come spend some time with us at the farm.

Leaf Of Life (Bryophyllum pinnatum)

Miracle plant, cathedral bells, resurrection plant, sprouting leaf, Hawaiian air plant

Bryophyllum pinnatum is used worldwide (internally) to treat inflammation, infections, kidney stones, GI tract, shortness of breath, asthma, bronchitis, anxiety, restlessness, and sleep disorders, or (topically) as a poultice for arthritis, joint pain, burns and infections of the skin. My personal experience is that the bruised leaf is the best thing for burns and heals the skin in a fraction of the time.

Jamaica has a rich culture of herbal medicine. Ask anyone you encounter in the country about their home remedies or the recipes of their Grandmothers and Aunties, and they will enthusiastically unleash a flood of wonderful, rich information.
Leaf of Life is usually at the top of the list of favorite herbs.

A pleasant tasting tea by itself, add a little honey, or mash garlic, turmeric & ginger to bruised leaves and simmer in water for 3 minutes, for maximum activation.

The common name ‘sprouting leaf’ comes from the fact that one leaf can produce many ‘baby’ plants.

Leaf of Life grows in south Florida sometimes as far north as central Florida, so we in the USA have access to this magnificent plant.

We will post more on the plants, herbs, spices and recipes we learned while traveling in Jamaica. If anyone is interested in taking their herbal knowledge to another level, we highly recommend a trip to Jamaica. The country, the people, and the culture are exceptionally beautiful.

A happy mistake! Last year we accidentally mixed vanilla and peppermint extracts. It gave us the idea to try a cacao nib extract (chocolate) and add it to the mix, to create our own

Peppermint-Bark Extract!!!

A great addition to coffee, hot chocolate, eggnog, or perfect for baking.
We tried peppermint-bark salt-water taffy! 😋

Grab an extract this holiday season and some organic, dried peppermint to make more for next year.

What we have learned about the herb farming, buying and processing industry is alarming. If you buy from the big outfits, you might what to do some research.

Because of this, Brushy Creek Farm will be founding a DIRECT harvester-to-buyer CO-OP!!!

Brushy Creek Farm is the GOLD standard when it comes to growing, harvesting, drying and processing herbs!
This co-op will be open to the PUBLIC!
Imagine getting the freshest quality herbs possible, in the same season, within a week or two of harvest!!!

We are a teaching farm, so our Harvesters know how to sustainably harvest, propagating more than they harvest. As the 'mother ship' farm, Brushy Creek Farm will provide seeds, cuttings, rhizomes, and education for our Harvesters to help their patches/crops grow.

Brushy Creek Farm is the GOLD standard for drying herbs. Compare our herbs against any of the big herbal outfits and we guarantee you can SEE the difference. You can even tour our farm and see our processing operation!

If you are an herbalist, functional medicine doctor, or individual wanting to take care of yourself and family, compare the Brushy Creek Farm GOLD standard against your current suppliers.

Brushy Creek Farm, we are better than organic.
