Leaf Of Life (Bryophyllum pinnatum)
Miracle plant, cathedral bells, resurrection plant, sprouting leaf, Hawaiian air plant
Bryophyllum pinnatum is used worldwide (internally) to treat inflammation, infections, kidney stones, GI tract, shortness of breath, asthma, bronchitis, anxiety, restlessness, and sleep disorders, or (topically) as a poultice for arthritis, joint pain, burns and infections of the skin. My personal experience is that the bruised leaf is the best thing for burns and heals the skin in a fraction of the time.
Jamaica has a rich culture of herbal medicine. Ask anyone you encounter in the country about their home remedies or the recipes of their Grandmothers and Aunties, and they will enthusiastically unleash a flood of wonderful, rich information.
Leaf of Life is usually at the top of the list of favorite herbs.
A pleasant tasting tea by itself, add a little honey, or mash garlic, turmeric & ginger to bruised leaves and simmer in water for 3 minutes, for maximum activation.
The common name ‘sprouting leaf’ comes from the fact that one leaf can produce many ‘baby’ plants.
Leaf of Life grows in south Florida sometimes as far north as central Florida, so we in the USA have access to this magnificent plant.
We will post more on the plants, herbs, spices and recipes we learned while traveling in Jamaica. If anyone is interested in taking their herbal knowledge to another level, we highly recommend a trip to Jamaica. The country, the people, and the culture are exceptionally beautiful.
