If you saw our post about the recent pasture walk we did regarding prescribed burns, and you are familiar with the recent Flanders Fire in Crow Wing County, you may have fire, fire safety and fire prevention on the brain. Check out this blog our board member Jim Chamberlin of Island Lake Farm wrote for Happy Dancing Turtle: https://www.happydancingturtle.org/post/fire-has-its-season-but-managing-even-better

Some of our board members, Jim Chamberlin of Island Lake Farm and Judy Worm of Clayhill Farm and Forest, got a chance to join Great River Greening , Sustainable Farming Association , and members from our local prescribed burn association for a pasture walk at Sunup Ranch Quarter Horses & Cattle to talk about silvopasture and the recent prescribed burn they conducted. A great evening with fantastic conversation, observations and reflections on the prescribed burn, and a feeling of community. Thank you to Peter Ripka with the Minnesota Farmers Union for joining in the conversation as well!

Management: How Grazing Decisions Protect Soil. Theory is only useful when it meets practice. This blog from Happy Dancing Turtle lays out the grazing strategies that protect soil: timely rotation, adequate recovery for plants, avoiding overgrazing, and using livestock as a tool to stimulate plant growth. Headwaters Beef Cooperative members put these practices into action every day. Responsible grazing keeps pastures productive, reduces erosion, supports wildlife habitat, and produces better-tasting, nutrient-rich beef.

Soil organic matter and stable carbon aren’t just climate buzzwords, they’re the foundation of water retention, nutrient cycling, and long-term pasture productivity. Through planned grazing, multi-species forages, and minimizing bare ground, Headwaters Beef member operations work to build organic matter on the landscape, helping soils retain more water, support wildlife, and capture carbon. Are you a person who notices how milk tastes–like, all the time–not just when it’s off? How about the taste of butter? Ever heard of “spring butter?” In this week’s blog, Jim Chamberlin explores the benefits of small-scale dairy production…and how when food connects back to nature, we support the natural world and start to rebuild abundance in our rural landscapes. https://www.happydancingturtle.org/post/dairy-healthier-when-nurtured-by-nature
