I've composed and rewritten this countless times and procrastinated with many, many reasons on why to wait. As if putting it in print makes it more real. Because it does. We've decided to close our beloved Tuck Shop indefinitely. Our gratitude is ENDLESS in this journey that started in the throes of the lockdown. A dream that came to fruition that (we hope) brought some joy and light to those who delighted and indulged in our imported sweets from "home." The glorious connections we made with new friends (aka, customers), fellow business owners, vendors, and event organizers are by far our favorite part of being The Tuck Shop. The smiles, the genuine excitement, the chats about Ireland trips and Irish heritage, the endless "yums" we heard--yep, those are consistent reminders of why we opened the shop.
However, all of that goodness is just not enough to keep us open right now. We can blame it on rising prices and shipping costs, and how treacherous it's been to keep our favorites in stock this year--these are all very true. But it's ultimately about who we are and what we cherish most--our family. The shop is a side "gig" for us as we both have full-time careers, but, to put it simply, our children need us more. We don't want to miss out on a second of these amazing souls that are growing way faster than it feels is necessary. We can't slow down time, but we hope to reignite the shop later. The dream is still alive for a storefront business, but that's a "someday" goal. For now, being more present for our family is a decision we'll never regret. It's the right time to be in the right place.
We extend IMMENSE appreciation to my mom for stepping in at events while Richard was coaching soccer, our family and friends for supporting us and being willing to try anything and lend a hand, to local businesses that graciously invited us into their establishments to give us a shot, and to the vendor fair organizers (especially Shaler and NH) who welcomed us with such care. We feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by so much love and support!
With love and appreciation,
Bethany and Richard
