The chickens are working overtime and we’re drowning in eggs We have 35 dozen eggs to get rid of. Yes. 35 dozen and we will have over 40 dozen tomorrow afternoon.

So here’s the deal. $1/dozen. That’s right. Even Walmart can’t undersell us and these are fresh eggs, no more than a week old.

$4/dozen

We are getting 4 to 5 dozen eggs a day after a long “dry spell”. So…

We have eggs for sale!

$4/dozendozen for beautiful fresh eggs.

Eggs are collected twice a day. Our chickens are healthy, beautiful and spoiled rotten. They get fruits and vegetables daily in addition to their feed.

Full disclosure: the Eggman has been known to pop popcorn for the chickens at times, to actually cook chicken treats for them and to make them salads.

We are also considering parting with some of our laying hens and some roosters. Just let me know if you’re interested. Laying hens are $25 each. Roosters are free.

We have friendly roosters looking for new homes. Hatched in May. Jersey giant/Bruges fighter crosses. We also have 3 isbar/owlbeard mixes and Spitzhauben mix roosters. Beautiful boys. The Jersey giant/Bruges fighter crosses are huge!

Great for flock protection, creating interesting looking chicks or freezer camp.

We were able to find a home for 14 cockerels and Gimpy recently and things have settled down a bit here at Goo Goo G’joob Coops. Ambroos, Troll, Brutus and Henry are all much happier and relaxed now that the young guys and Gimpy have moved out.

The roosters are happy, but the hens are unimpressed with management and have gone on strike.

Actually, they are molting and egg production has ground to a halt. We’ve gone from getting up to 5 dozen eggs a day to getting 5 -6 eggs a day.

We have negotiated terms with the girls (who chose Karen the cream legbar as their union rep) and we’ve agreed to add more treats, some high protein high calcium snacks and to let them rest until their new feathers come in. When they’ve regrown their feathers, it’s back to work or they’re fired!!!

Roosters pictured are gone, but there are new ones that are about 10 weeks old and ready to go .

Would anybody like some young roosters with diverse bloodlines?

The eggman had a blast this spring filling up incubators and hatching mostly purebred crosses. Of course we ended up with too many roosters so we have some looking for new homes.

The adult roosters in this coop are 2 Greenfire Farms lemon and gold owlbeards, a Greenfire Farms Isbar (also known as a Silverrud Blue), and Gimpy, a Greenfire Farms Icelandic rooster. Gimpy apparently suffered some injuries on his way to us as a day old chick. He’s perfectly healthy, but he looks like his tail was put on at the wrong angle and he walks sideways.

The hens that the roosters have had access to in their coop are Appenzeller Spitzhaubens, cream legbars, owlbeards, assorted marans, olive eggers and dark and buff Brahma’s.

The crosses listed in the descriptions may not be 100% accurate, except for the first one which is rather obvious.

These cockerels are about 10 weeks old and would love to go home with you.

We are in Plainfield near the Orange/Plainfield line.

In this segment of ‘Meet the Flock’, I’d like to introduce Brutus Rex, our Bruges Fighter rooster.

He is the only rooster in the shed (there are 4 roosters in the coop), and he is huge.

The Bruge Fighter exhibits several striking characteristics. They are large, sometimes reaching 30” tall and weighing 12 pounds. Their weight consists primarily of muscle, and they are an intimidating breed in appearance. Their feet are truly huge. The chick in the photos has huge feet and is one of Brutus Rex’s offspring. Second is their plumage. Their feathers lay close to their body as they don't have much under-fluff (the downy feathers). In a way, this helps accentuate their height.

They have an incredibly fierce gaze which is shielded by the overhang of a prominent brow. They actually look like they are scowling. Brutus Rex may look mean, but he is actually a sweet boy and is very protective of his hens.

Brutus tends to be attracted to the smallest hens in the flock, and the difference in their sizes is quite amusing.

Bruge Fighters are a very rare breed and we feel good about helping to keep the breed from extinction.

In the photos below, look at the difference in the thickness of the Bruge Fighter’s legs compared to the Queen Silvia standing next to him in the close up pic. His legs are more than twice as thick as hers!

Incubators are full with the second batch of 44 eggs. 20 new chicks hatched last week. It will be interesting to see what they look like when they’re grown.

We had a disaster over the weekend. The eggman was carrying 18 dozen eggs out to the car Saturday morning to be delivered. Wearing sandals. There is still ice and snow on the ground and it was 18°. He slipped while holding a box of 18 dozen eggs.

The good news: the only thing he hurt was his pride.

The bad news: 18 dozen eggs destroyed.

Just part of the fun of keeping chickens!

There are 10 nesting boxes in the coop. 10. So why are there 5 chickens sitting on top of each other in this one? Notice squawky Astrid carrying on because she wants to get into that box, too. The egg man says he pulls at least 8 eggs out of that big nesting box each day, and that he usually has to reach under at least 3 hens to get the eggs. If you’re looking for fresh, local eggs, we have them! $4/dozen

One of the girls laid an enormous egg today. I’m not sure, but I think it might’ve been one of the Beilefelders that laid it.

I’m charging $4 a dozen for eggs, but they are different colors and different sizes. I don’t think I’ve had a single dozen that was actually uniform in size. Is $4 a dozen too much to charge for a dozen of multi sized multicolored eggs?

02/17/2025

76 eggs total laid by the girls yesterday and today, in cartons and ready to go.
$4/dozen or will barter for square (rectangular) bales of hay. I will give you one dozen eggs for each bale of hay. I only need about five or six.
