We have an update on the abandoned calf from our previous post that heifer #8 took on as her own.

This morning, the farm crew noticed that the adopted little girl has developed a case of scours—also known as neonatal calf diarrhea. This condition causes dehydration and is the leading cause of death in young calves.

As for how she got it—it can be caused by anything from viruses to bacteria to parasites…the list is pretty extensive. And unfortunately, no matter how proactive we try to be, we can’t protect them from everything. No matter how much we wish we could.

Our team has been quick to begin a treatment plan, which includes things like resorb and other system supporting medications to hopefully get this little girl back on track.

For the time being, she is being isolated from her new mom and sister so we can hopefully prevent the spread to the other calf, as well as make certain of her liquid intake in the coming hours and days. #8 is still keeping a close eye on both of her girls and we hope we can reunite them soon.

We know this isn’t a happy update and for that we apologize. We’d love for every story out here to be perfect all the time, but that’s simply not the reality of farm life. All we can do is give these animals the best care we possibly can, and go from there. And we thought you deserved the whole story—not just the highlights.

As always, we thank all of you for your encouragement and support. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

We will keep you posted on this sweet family.❤️

A feel good story from the farm for your Monday!🥰🐄

A sweet heifer, tagged #8, recently had her first calf! The calf was a girl who wound up being a little weak at birth. So, our farm crew moved both mother and baby to our infirmary to give them both some extra TLC and close monitoring.

The following day, a different heifer in the herd calved. Unfortunately, THIS mama didn’t want anything to do with her little girl. This happens from time-to-time, sadly, where a heifer doesn’t take to her calf. Despite our crew’s best efforts at facilitating their relationship, it was decided it would be in both of their best interests if the calf was removed and raised on a bottle. She was also brought to the infirmary and placed in a stall next to #8 and her baby.

Immediately, #8 was attempting to reach through the stall bars to get to this new calf. And 24 hours later, she was still keeping a close watch over both her own calf, and the motherless one next door.

Our farm crew decided to see if, given the opportunity, #8 would take on this second calf as her own. And they were right! #8 joyfully welcomed the second baby girl, as if she’d been hers all along.

This family of three is doing well! And these two little girls are thrilled to be sisters.

Another day, another sweet, baby sheep! 🐑❤️

Here at CFF we pride ourselves on stepping outside the box. For example, many farms have guardian dogs who watch over their livestock herds, but not us! We have an attentive guardian pony, who takes her job VERY seriously. Everyone tell her what a good job she’s doing! 😂❤️🐴
