Some might say Spring is in the air around the homestead. My first successful batch of Ancona ducklings is around 4.5 weeks old. We have another batch in the incubator due to start hatching in 12 days, and mama is setting on her own clutch of eggs.

Also we have a new addition to our little homestead. Our oldest daughter's pet rabbit "Cuddles" (not pictured) now has a friend that she has named Gerald. More on that to come.

If you're interested in Ancona ducklings or hatching eggs feel free to reach out. I can't ship at the moment, but still make the occasional trip to NE OK or other parts of Oklahoma.

Sometimes we say things without fully thinking them through. This could be as simple as not thinking through how something will sound as it comes out, or more serious like how it might affect someone and you ability to be a witness for Christ.

Today's example was a little on the lighter side of things.

I went into town earlier to get Melissa her free wooden roses from Lowe's, and while I was there I decided to go down the window aisle to price check for a couple future projects I'd like to work on.

As I came to the end of the aisle, remember it's a window aisle, a younger employee asked me if he could help me with anything. Without thinking, I replied "No thank you, I'm just window shopping."

As I walked away, I realized what I had said and had to laugh.

It's roughly day 6 on the last bunch of ancona duck eggs I put in my incubator. So I thought I'd share what a healthy embryo looks like when candled at this stage. As you can see there are active blood vessels that resemble a spider to a certain extent.

I loaded another 16 Ancona duck eggs in the incubator over the weekend. I'll have some limited quantities of hatching eggs available soon. Feel free to message me if interested. I can't ship, but pickup can potentially be arranged in the Pollok, Lufkin, and Nacogdoches areas.

Hopefully I'll have some ducklings available soon.

One of our Ancona ducks started laying recently. I've never tried to hatch ducks before so even though I'd consider it the wrong season to deal with baby birds, I decided I'd do a trial run in a cheap incubator to learn. I'm 4 days in with 5 eggs. I'll let you know how the little experiment is going closer to the 28 day mark. If all goes well, I might have some ducklings/fertilized eggs available come Spring -Zach

Thursday night we had an intruder steal two of my ducks from the coop. An unfortunate event, the cause of which has hopefully been remedied. I'm hoping that I'm still on track to get eggs in the September/October timeline, but we shall see.

The summer pears/Keifers have been ripe for a few weeks now, and the girls have been eating at them but due to a sickness that swept through the house by force, we haven't been able to fix anything with them. It's taken us weeks but we're finally past whatever the plague was that the girls had.

On a more positive note, the beauty berries are ripe here, and of all the wild edible things growing on the property, beauty berry jelly is probably my wifes favorite. I actually happened across the fact they were edible by accident last year while scanning plants with my plant ID app and doing research to verify.

The berries when ripe turn a bright almost unnatural looking purple, they're small, and a bit of a pain to pick. They're also full of seeds and when raw are almost inedible, however with a little patience that inedible purple berry turns into a fragrant brown (looks like it's burnt) liquid, that when sugar and pectin is added, turns into a delectable red juice that solidifies into a jelly that tastes like grape jelly with a hint of a floral taste mixed in.

We enjoyed our first Texas grown pineapple this morning. Wasn't as big as the ones I've grown previously while living in Missouri, but delicious none the less. (Now if I can just figure out how to scale growing them in the available weather conditions.)

Also, the Ancona ducks are enjoying playing in the rain. They should start laying soon.

Hi everyone, this is Zach. It took me a bit to get admin privileges from my wonderful wife to this page. I've got a few more recent happenings from around the property. Momma Carolina Wren set up shop at the base of my banana tree and is raising her babies. (Last year it was a side burner on the grill.....) The dewberries are ripe for the picking, if I only had the time to pick them. I've been finding what appear to be passion fruit vines popping up, and I added in a picture of an Easter flower arrangement I quickly threw together over the weekend for Melissa made fully from flowers off the property.

I also think I figured out where my fish were going, but I haven't found a fix for that yet.

The pears are growing nicely, though I don't expect the bumper crop we had last year. I also have several pineapples looking like they'll ripen in about 6 months give or take. I'll try to give a more in depth update on flora this weekend.

We suffered a heartbreaking lesson last month when a dog broke into our chicken run and killed Bubbles, Chickaletta, and Chicken Little. Thankfully, our chicks were in the brooder in the garage and were OK.

The chicks are doing well and have moved outdoors to the more secure chicken coop. Zach is hard at work building a larger side-by-side chicken coop and duck enclosure with side-by-side runs. The ducks moved out there today, and the chickens will go once the outdoor runs are built.

We have another shipment of ducklings expected this week, and also welcomed Cuddles the California rabbit to the farm.
